Do they mean pre or post tax? I always assumed it was post tax, however when people say it, do they mean before tax or after?

If ‘salary’ or an annual figure always pre tax

SarahLHs · 31/01/2024 17:02

For me if someone says their annual salary I'd assume they mean pre-tax and If they say their monthly pay that will be what they take home post tax.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/01/2024 17:03

Pre-tax, unless they say "take home".

PuttingDownRoots · 31/01/2024 17:03

"I earn £40k"... thats my annual headline salary

"I bring home £3k a month"... thats my post tax take home

Pre-tax. The actual amount of take home pay will vary from person to person (and tax year to tax year)

Getonnow · 31/01/2024 17:07

Who are these "people"? I don't think I could name anyone who's told me what they earn.

That said, intuitively I'd think gross if they named a salary, net if they gave a monthly/weekly amount

@Getonnow on those 'what do you earn' threads.

Usually pre-tax when talking about an annual amount and after tax when talking about a monthly amount. Lots of people get muddled about gross and net though so it isn't always clear.
