Straw poll - age vs ailments

Don't know if I'm outside the norm or not, but early 40s and I have:

  • an underactive thyroid (medicated but not well and NHS don't care)
  • vitamin deficiencies (picked up some via NHS but poor advice causing me to do my own research and private testing/regime to follow up - can't afford to do that regularly)
  • a dodgy tooth that's more filling than tooth but dentist recommends keeping it there a long as possible because pulling it would destabilise rest of them
  • sore wrists, not always both and not always equally bad, can go for a while before I notice them again
  • shoulders that live round my ears so that most of the time I don't notice the shoulder pain any more
  • a dodgy hip that never recovered from PGP after my 2nd pregnancy
  • a clicky painful knee
Am I alone in falling apart?

I got hypothyroid in my 30’s, so you’ve done well!
You sound peri, try some good quality omega 3. It got rid of my painful, stiff feet/knees in the morning.

user14699084799 · 31/01/2024 15:57

I’d bet you a fiver the sore wrists etc is a peri menopause thing. Sore joints was my first symptom when i was 39/40. It was so weird, one joint at a time, wrists, ankles, knees, hips, shoulder, but never two joints together! Used to hurt in varying degrees for a day or two then okay for a couple of days then another moving part would pipe up! Lasted about 18mths/2 years before it stopped and moved on to heavy periods which have now stopped at 45, replaced by random hot flushes. Wish I’d appreciated being 25 at the time!

I'm 30 and have carpal tunnel syndrome, practically no cartilage in my knees so I have to wear support straps, high blood pressure AND low blood pressure, a different tooth breaks or cracks every week, I have deficiencies in just about every vitamin/mineral, bad hips, my eyesight, hearing and memory is rapidly getting worse and I have hypoglycemia.

I've finally been diagnosed with an only recently discovered by scientists genetic disorder that explains most of it but I still feel about 80 and I'm not happy about it.

Serencwtch · 31/01/2024 18:42

That's not good & doesn't sound normal. Is there something underlying it like poor diet or obesity
Otherwise I think you're just unlucky.
MIL seemed to have everything wrong with her in her 50s but then lived relatively healthy until.96.

Holybatrimony · 31/01/2024 18:56

I got nothing til mid fifties when I had high blood pressure. But that was mainly because I'm overweight

Isseywith3witchycats · 31/01/2024 19:27

Im 67 and until about two years ago i had escaped most ailments except a bad back, i now have an under active thyroid, painful knees which affect my walking ,a more bad back achy shoulders am really starting to feel my age and cant even get to see a doctor they phone you and you have to be almost dying to actually get a face to face appointment

TigerRag · 31/01/2024 19:39

35 and a load of genetic health issues. (They either showed up much later with my parents or they're just carriers) Some hearing issues and vertigo. The former is a rare side effect from medication and the latter is from a head injury

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 31/01/2024 19:42

@DustyLee123 it's been a decade in the making - been medicated for 4 years now. Which Omega do you use? Got such an extensive regime already - feel like I'm rattling.

@Serencwtch I'm a size 14 so a little heavier than I should be but definitely not obese, eat OK and get out walking daily.

I do wonder if it's genetics/auto immune or something that hasn't been diagnosed @Product3257

My teeth used to crumble badly and i would have to visit the dentist every four months for emergency treatment. I think in a ten year period I only made it to the six month check twice. It all changed when I started taking Vitamin D supplements. Might be worth trying that. If you do then take it with Vitamin K2 as that helps to pull the calcium out of your blood and into your bones. It's like Iron and Vit C, they really need to be taken together.

Meadowfinch · 31/01/2024 20:13

60 yo 30 months post BC & seemingly all well. Still getting over the 'fear'. But otherwise, no problems.

Run 5k a couple of times a week
Practice martial arts to maintain flexibility
Cycle, garden, work full time.
Not over or under weight, generally well.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 31/01/2024 20:17

60, had cubital and carpal tunnel surgery on the left around 10 years ago, had a schwannoma removed from my sinus around 20 years ago but that's it. I don't gym or run but I do walk regularly and I foster a small child with complex needs who is totally dependent on others for all of his care and mobility so I spend a lot of time lifting him, I think he helps keep me fit (physically and mentally).

Thelnebriati · 31/01/2024 20:23

Some of those symptoms can be linked to Vitamin D deficiency - your GP should have offered you a blood test. Can you see someone else?

PPTorPDF · 31/01/2024 20:25

Early 40s and no issues at all. Don't even ever have a cold, must have been years ago since my last one. Never tired, always wake up feeling refreshed etc.

ThePoshUns · 31/01/2024 20:28

52
The odd bout of sciatica if I sit for too long.
Touch wood nothing else.

darkmodeera · 31/01/2024 20:31

46 and medicated for under active thyroid. Used to have really achy joints before I got HRT and levothyroxine.
Had a terrible back until I started doing pilates.
So far I think I'm alright apart from still coughing form that bloody virus.

Paw2024 · 31/01/2024 20:33

39 and a load of autoimmune issues
Cholinergic urticaria (since age 12)
Severe neutropenia (since age 32)
Hashimotos (since age 36)
Back problems (cauda equina age 33)
Endometriosis (just diagnosed)

AzureBlue99 · 31/01/2024 20:34

If you looked at me you would say I am in good Nick, late 50s. Natural blonde hair, good face skin, good unlined neck, nice shaped face, good teeth. I give off a youthful vibe. I was feeling quite smug. But just last night I did an inventory of my ailments, that individually don't add up to much, but altogether paint quite a scary ageing picture for me. I feel like a slow decline has ramped up even though I take care of myself. Loss of mobility is my greatest worry.

I have a terrible scalp, scabby and scaly. Sinus issues, all the time. Loss of vision at the top of one eye. Tinnitus. Had a rotator cuff (shoulder) in the last few years, has left me with some pain still. Sweat rash under big norks, quite a lot of the time. Scoliosis. Distended stomach/spotting after menopause (been referred for that). Mottled skin on legs. Really heavy thighs. Knees are sore and stiff all the time. Calves get strange feeling, like full of water. Plantar faciltis. Fungal nail infection. Bunion. Red patch (like bright red) on side of foot - suspect some type of rheumatism. Plus I don't cope mentally as well as I used to, so stressed a lot of the time with poor sleep and racing heart. I am a wreck.

ifonly4 · 31/01/2024 20:35

57 - nothing other than one lower chipped tooth at front dentist doesn't feel need/can't do anything with and another badly chipped tooth at back - other half chipped off during covid and has been made up/filled, so tooth probably on lost legs. Very lucky, haven't seen a doctor for around 12 years.

Justcallmebebes · 31/01/2024 20:36

Late 50's and no health problems at all and never have had. But I do keep v active, go to the gym at least 5 x a week and eat v v healthily so, touch wood, I will remain fit and active for a while yet

LadyDanburysHat · 31/01/2024 20:41

Age 46, had Graves disease but now under control. Gallbladder out last year for stones. Fibroid discovered last year that I need to consider how to deal with it.

2Old2Tango · 31/01/2024 20:42

I'm 60

  • painful osteoarthritis in my knees (and aches developing in other joints) that makes me walk like an 80 year old
  • overactive bladder/weak pelvic floor which means I'm always looking for a loo when out

Compared to DH though, who is 58 and on his third lot of cancer, which is now terminal, I consider I've got off lightly.

Outofideas79 · 31/01/2024 20:45

I'm 35. Feel tired pretty much constantly, dodgy hips (undiagnosed until i was 20 congenital hip dysplasia), pain from coccyx after mucking round and slipping into a hot tub a few years ago 😆 (no alcohol was involved, I promise 🤣.) I have Hallux rigidus in my big toe which can be pretty pain ful at times. However I have really good teeth (one filling) I've walked 110 miles so far this month and am aiming to beat the 1350 miles that I walked last year. I know I should take multivitamins and go to sleep earlier.

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 01/02/2024 19:00

Thanks all, Yes Vit D was low so I've been supplementing and also taking K - I've learnt a lot about co factors.

48 and fit and well here (except for Crohns but I've had that since I was 30)
