ADHD coaching - thoughts?

bubblicious353 · 31/01/2024 15:39

Hi, (I posted this in ND Mumsnetters too, but noticed it doesn't appear in Active, so re-posting here for traffic)
I've name changed for this as it's very identifying. I'm currently training to be an ADHD coach and I'm finding it fascinating. But I'm not sure who my clients will be as I don't actually know many ND adults (I don't plan to work with children) and I'm not much of a self-promoting type. I wondered if I could do some research here to find out what people know about ADHD coaching and what more they might like to know. So if anyone would mind answering the following questions I'd be really grateful.
A) have you heard of ADHD coaching and do you know what it entails?
B) have you heard of Access to work? Did you know it is a free government funded scheme that can help with all kinds of support (including) coaching which may help you to succeed at work?
C) would you find it helpful if someone helped you to apply for Access to Work support?
D) any other questions!
Thanks so much in advance for any responses.

I see ADHD coaching as coaching someone to be 'normal' No thanks, no desire for that whatsoever. Success for people with ADHD is about building the life that suits the individual not trying to fit the individual into the system - that's doomed to fail.

Oh my giddy aunt we now have ADHD coaches cos well lets face it we need to be coached in how to deal with the people we are.

Why was this thread resurected?

Saw something on TikTok about ADHD coaches which got me thinking

Psychoticbreak · 21/05/2024 21:54

@Rippledipple the fact we are actually the normal ones doesnt seem to rest well. I have said it before many times if you look up the word normal in a dictionary it tells you it is someone pretending so us with ND dont pretend we are just us so we are the 'normal' ones.

I also bloody hate life coaches.

Well if is is on tiktok...

Honestly no patience for this sorry. OP I think you need a proper job or at least a qualification in something if you are going to pretend to coach people of any walk of life, anything about life. I hope you have enough life experience yourself to do the same.

The issue is that the government aka tax payers!!! are paying for ADHD coaches, and the coaching isn’t regulated, I’ve done a google search and gone down a rabbit hole after seeing stuff on TT, ADHD coaches are charging £150-£250 per hour! I’m in the wrong job clearly

Sory I meant my post directed at the OP of the thread. It is absolute horseshite the same as life coaches and and any other person out there who sets themselves up to help people live their lives - then the kick is it is funded too. The world is insane it really is. There are days I regret all the money I spent on my actual qualifications when I see this. And some of these people can be so damaging too. It is awful the government are funding this and allowing it.

Yeah I knew you meant OP.

the coaching thing has pissed me off. It’s all over TT about coaching and other stuff people can claim.

I’ve struggled throughout my life. I know what I should do to improve things, the problem is my brain doesn’t allow it! 😂

And if I’m bored, well that’s it I’m off looking for a dopamine hit! 🤣

a coach I guess could advise me what to do, but I’d either ignore it or spend several hours/days trying to validate what they advise especially if they aren’t credible.

I get why people get sucked in, the thing that pisses me off is ADHD coaching isn’t regulated and no way should they be allowed to charge what they are with no regulations

@Psychoticbreak your username also happens to be the name of an excellent song.
Couldn’t help myself!

My DH is ADHD as is my DS I feel like a full time coach already, so for me if they were open to it I'd look at an outside coach for support.

The coach may have methods I'm yet to explore, I will add my DS at 20 is so self aware and knows how to manage himself way better than my 50+ DH who was raised in different era of "just get on with it" he's the tricky one as he denies all knowledge of his difficulties.

So as a partner and mum I'd find it useful.

Karatema · 22/05/2024 11:06

No I didn't know there was such a thing! If I'd known 30 years ago I'd have asked about the benefits.
I have my own office because no one else can stand working with me! 🤣
I had heard of Access to work but, again, never thought it might be of benefit to me!

As someone who has had ADHD coaching I'd say this is not true at all. My coach worked with me to look at how I can do my job / maintain my career which is within the "normal" world but in the way that works for best for the way that my brain works.

If you are lucky enough to be self employed and live your life in a place where you can completely do things your own way then that's great. Most of us, unfortunately, have to live in a "neurotypical" world.

Zonder · 23/05/2024 06:48

I wish I'd had a coach when I was younger to help me manage my life and organise things. I think particularly at uni I would have e benefited from a coach to help me organise work.
