Idyllic writers retreat for a week - where would you go?

So I'm going away for a week to complete the final edit of my novel. I've been on organized writers retreat before, this is just my own.

I live in central belt of Scotland for what's its worth. Been looking at both:

  • cheap flights to Europe from Glasgow/Edinburgh
  • Scottish places (but they're so expensive)

I'd like a place that is beside the sea or a short walk away, with other nature walks optional.

Any ideas folks?

Gladstone library, Cheshire?

Gladstone library, Cheshire?

Oh, I’ve always fancied this, but never gone!

What do you need, OP? Does it need broadband, to be accessible via public transport, what budget? What are the optimal conditions for you to do what you need to? I ask because there have been times when I’ve taken myself off to write or revise, and just sat admiring the view or walked twenty miles a day because the beauty was distracting…

I need ideas for this too! Shamelessly placemarking!

I know lots of people who recommend gladstones (academic writers).

think I’d get an Airbnb by the Cornish coast…. (Dreams)

Get a cottage on the tip of the Llyn Peninsula, just stunning. Boat over to Bardsey Island. Loads of beaches and a coastal path linking it all.

Gladstone's Library wonderful too, but in a village, and the coast nearby is quite tame. Be a 30 minute drive to Gronant.

This always looks fab to me:

Or this place in Tipperary:

@AnglepoisePond good questions! For the most part id say yes to wifi and public transport.

That said I've added one place to my list that is remote in Kintyre, Argyll where they pick you up from the town. It doesn't have any wifi though. I'd probably take a dongle.

I know what you mean with the view. More often than not I find it helps. But going anywhere too exotic might result in distraction and I really do need to get the work done!

Hi,
advice plse.
I have written a novel and I was wondering if anyone knows any good UK writing competitions to enter? I don’t know if my book is any good and I can’t afford an editor so thought a writing comp may be a good way. Thanks in advance. N x

What do you need/want from the destination?

I would recommend the Isle of Bute - not least of all cos they do a great literary festival and I’m really impressed with the local book shop and the library

Key House in Falkland, near St Andrews | Cottages.com in Falkland, Scotland (Fife)

Stayed here a couple of years ago. It's lovely!

Google limnisa in Greece. They have writers' retreats.

Well it's a few days later and I can't decide.

Ive narrowed it down to Ulva, a small island near Mull in Scotland. Spoke to the owner of accommodation and all good. Plenty of nature walks. Total solitude.

On the other hand, a jolt of sunshine in Spain is still very appealing! I speak the language btw, used to live there

Travel time about the same. How to decide....

Interesting. I’d definitely vote yoga. Personally I’d never go somewhere hot and sunny to write! I need cold, storms, rain!!!

KeiraKnightley2 · 02/02/2024 21:01

You might be on to something @Newbie1011

While I lived in Spain I hardly wrote a word! I had to come back to Scotland to get on with it. So leaning more towards Scotland.

On the other hand the constant rain has been so depressing and I feel I need a mood boost.

If you go for Ulva, will you repost and let us know how it was? May treat myself to similar this year :)
