How to get rid of the smell of cooked fish from the house

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 30/01/2024 16:29

Seriously, I am never cooking fish again. Every time I do the house reeks for days and the dd15 says it disgusting and makes her feel sick!

I cooked myself smoked haddock yesterday (in the oven, wrapped tightly in foil in the hood of keeping the smell locked in). I have just come in from work and it smells like Billingsgate market in every room.

DD had already lit a wax melt when she came in from school and I’ve opened all the windows (not great at 4.30pm on a damp January afternoon), in the hope the stench will ease.

Any other tips?

Yeah that's why I won't cook fish either. Just seems to penetrate every area of the downstairs for ages.

There has to be a way to sort that so watching.

DelilahBucket · 30/01/2024 16:37

I lit scented candles in the whole of downstairs, opened windows and then cooking other things helps too. Smoked kippers were delicious, but it did take until yesterday evening to get rid of the smell from Sunday morning!

You have my sympathy as I feel the same way and we have a very small house so I feel it even travels upstairs to the bedrooms.

I'll only have fish if it is done on the BBQ in the garden!

Lovemusic82 · 30/01/2024 16:40

I would eat fish almost every night if it didn’t stink the house out. We have fish pie tonight and I managed to get salmon juice (out the packaging) all over me so the smell of fish was strong before I even started cooking 🤢.

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 30/01/2024 17:35

Peanutsforthebluetit I put the packaging straight out in the garage where the recycling box is. Cooked it in the air fryer so washed that out straight after dinner. Think the smell just lingers in the air. I do try to hold off having fish until the summer where I can either cook it outside or have all windows and doors open. I’ll get some of that spray in anyhow, thanks for the recommendation.

Love kippers DelilahBucket would have them every breakfast if it wasn’t for the stench (and bones!).

Same here SingingSands usually save cooking fish until the summer but really fancied some yesterday. Good job we have no one visiting.

Lovemusic82 oh no, nothing worse than fishy clothes lol. Dh takes a tin of mackerel with him to work and often drops the juice on his work clothes, good job he works outside.

Just take the air fryer outside and cook it in the garden?

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 19:11

I cook kippers in a jug of boiling water…don’t smell so much. I don’t think fish smells that bad…maybe I’m kidding myself….

Abracadabra1 · 30/01/2024 19:16

A Prices cooks candle helps

JessicaPeach · 30/01/2024 19:17

I don't think a wax melt will help, you need a candle I think to get rid of a smell

Ridingthegravytrain · 30/01/2024 19:27

Tend to do ours on the bbq.

Ewoklady · 30/01/2024 19:35

I burn citronella essential oil for smells

Notsonifty50 · 30/01/2024 19:48

I always keep the kitchen door closed when I'm cooking to stop the whole house smelling.

When I'm cooking fish I open the kitchen window and turn the extractor fan on. I also light a Price's cooks candle before I start cooking and leave it lit all evening. The bin gets emptied if there's fish packaging in it and so does the food waste bin.

SOxon · 30/01/2024 20:14

lemon in a pan with water, leave it bubbling,

VoleChomper · 30/01/2024 20:17

Yeah, I always have a Price's chef's candle in the kitchen. Leave it burn for a good couple of hours.

OldTinHat · 30/01/2024 20:34

I burn candles in the kitchen when cooking smelly things and put all wrappers, waste etc straight outside in the bin.

Lottieskeeper · 30/01/2024 21:20

We love smoked haddock in this house but can't stand the smell in the house after.
Tried all the tricks, opened the door and window in the kitchen, cooks candle, packaging straight in the outside bin. But nothing seemed to work.
We have now changed our smoked fish of choice to basa and have no problem with the smell, and it's a bit cheaper too. Win win!

That’s interesting, I’ll have to try it.

Prices chef candles are the go to in our house for the smelly meals .
Light before cooking and leave for a couple of hours

jay55 · 31/01/2024 09:34

Bowl of bicarb left out to trap the smell or a fridge deodoriser.

Smoked fish is another level of lingering smell. We'd always have smoked haddock for Good Friday growing up, I totally understand why it was only once a year despite being filling, healthy and cheap at the time.

Songiii · 31/01/2024 22:21

Boil peels, lemons, oranges etc. you can also add cloves, cinnamon and an essential oil. Tends to get the smell out

Flossflower · 01/02/2024 08:14

I use cookafish bags and put them in the outside bin after use. They are available on Amazon and Ocado. They are a small version of oven roasting bags for chicken. I still hate getting the fish out of the container and putting it in the bags and sometimes use disposable kitchen gloves for this.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 01/02/2024 08:16

Prices candles but for some reason you need to light them or have them lit while cooking. Afterwards is too late.

Friarclose · 03/02/2024 22:45

Incense sticks!! They stink but when their smell clears all other smells are gone too
