A town like York

Shettani · 30/01/2024 14:17

I struggle with anxiety and am making some progress pushing myself to do stuff which I have been avoiding. We went to York for a week last year and I absolutely loved the place- are there other towns out there which are very similar to York?

Be careful what you wish for.
Tourists love York but it's not all it's cracked up to be when you live here.
The reality is it's a nightmare during tourist season, Viking festival, summer, Christmas etc.
You can't move for the visitors, most of the decent shops are closed or closing down, coffee shops and bars are replacing them.
The weekends are full of hen and stag parties.
Evenings in town are full of piss heads.
Town can be a no-go area for people with families.
If we go out for a drink we go during the day so we get out of town before evening, there's always fights especially in summer.
The train station smells like a brewery in spite of it being an alcohol free zone.
There are beggars everywhere.
Plus it's expensive to live here

Did you visit Betty's when you were in York op ?

We've been to York a lot but have to agree that it can be quite intimidating at night.
We went for dinner at a lovely restaurant called 'After Eight '.
Walking back to the hotel afterwards was a bit scary.

@Greenpolkadot yes I did! I absolutely loved the fat rascals 😊

It depends what you really loved about York, but Bath, Oxford, Cambridge and Durham are all lovely, or perhaps Canterbury.

This is completely overblown!

We live about an hour away from York and love it, we go there a couple of times a month but now tend to go during the week, unless we’re meeting friends on a Saturday. We tend to get there around lunchtime, meander round, have a nice early dinner and leave by 7.30/8pm, particularly on a Saturday, as like PP said, it’s not so lovely on a Saturday night, so many hen & stag parties and not somewhere we want to spend a pub evening.

We love Edinburgh, Harrogate is also nice as is Cambridge.
