Is getting an electric car on finance a good idea for us?

I have an ICE car which has been reliable but it's very old and probably has not much life left in it. Every year it costs a fortune to get it through it's MOT. I budget £1400 a year specifically for my car's maintenance.
I was working from home up until a few months ago when I started a new job that involves traveling around the country most days and my fuel bill has gone from being around £100 a month to £250 a month.

We save about £300 a month but have recently returned from maternity leave which ate most of our savings so we only have £5000 in savings right now but no debt other than mortgage.

Our house has solar panels with a battery and a tariff that allows us to buy cheap energy overnight.

Because of the children's car seats and the pram etc. I would need an estate and we think an MG MG 5 would be a good fit for us. We can get a second hand with low milage for about £15,000. The finance deals we've seen suggest with a £3500 deposit we can get a PCP deal for about £200 a month. I am hoping that I can decrease the money I set aside specifically for maintenance to £400 and between that £1000 a year saving and hopefully halving the amount we spend on fuel this will make the monthly payment so I don't have to take from my monthly savings budget too much, if at all.

My 3 year old will also be starting school in September so our childcare bill will reduce slightly so we should have more to save each month and in theory, if the government childcare promise comes into play, my 1 year old's childcare bill will reduce also as she'll be entitled to 15 free hours from September also.

My car is due it's MOT in April however so I'm not keen to spend the money to get it through it's MOT only to buy a new car half a year later. The car will have virtually no resale value as it's such a banger.

I've always been very anti debt but this feels like it could be a good way to get a much better, more efficient car without spending too much more than we currently are.
What are others thought though please? Advice greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have done your calculations very carefully, I can't comment on the MG or the loan but my personal experience of switching to EV: We were in a similar situation with an old ICE which was unlikely to pass its next MOT without a lot of money being spent on it.

We did have savings so we traded in the old ICE snd bought a second hand EV. Our "fuel" bills have gone from £200 a month to £50.

Also I love how quiet and smooth the EV is to drive.

On the PCP how much can you get the deposit down with still having affordable repayments?

@NigelHarmansNewWife the lowest I can put in is £1000 but that takes the monthly payments up to £300 which makes me feel uncomfortable. Though I don't actually know how much we'll truly save in fuel so it may well be more than half and then we maybe could spend more a month and keep more of our savings untouched.
