Heathrow for afternoon and evening

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 12:43

We get to heathrow about 1pm, have the Hilton hotel booked near Hatton Cross Tube. We'll have to be up at 5 am the next morning.

Just DH and I .... I think it's worth the hour ish trip into London to get tea and maybe pop to a museum first.

But DH less keen - is there anything near Heathrow that's nearer and worth a trip.

We've popped into Windsor before now with similar timings.

The South Kensington museums and nearby restaurants etc are only about half an hour away on the Piccadilly line. Wouldn’t say there’s anywhere else closer worth going other than Windsor.

mitogoshi · 30/01/2024 12:51

South Kensington museums then food nearby might be a good option.

doubleshotcappuccino · 30/01/2024 12:54

Richmond is beautiful and nearer . Ole & Steen would be nice for afternoon tea .. or Megan's for a bite to eat

Geranium1984 · 30/01/2024 12:58

Take the Elizabeth Line into Central London. You could go into Covent Garden perhaps. Should be quick! Or a bit slower, Picadilly Line to South Kensington for museums and restaurants.
Not much around Heathrow except the airport 😅

Smallinthesmoke · 30/01/2024 13:01

Elizabeth line is incredibly speedy. You could take it to Tottenham Court Rd and amble down Charing Cross Rd to Covent Garden, Chinatown, National Portrait Gallery or National Gallery. Both of these last are good for tea.

Smallinthesmoke · 30/01/2024 13:04

TfL journey planner is quoting me 32 mins on the Elizabeth Line from Terminal 2/3 to Tottenham Court Rd. Plus it is nice and spangly and new.

snorlax99 · 30/01/2024 13:14

It's definitely worth going into London, there isn't much other than more hotels around Heathrow

Agreed,

Re timing and use of Elizabeth Line remember(?) you have to travel Hatton Cross> T1/T2 by tube before connecting with the Elizabeth.

It might be as quick to simply hop on the eastbound Piccadilly line at Hatton Cross and enjoy the delights of Hounslow, etc as you head into town.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 30/01/2024 13:31

Hounslow has delights to enjoy??

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 13:36

Yes we'll be wanting to drop bags at hotel so will be going from Hatton Cross. Google maps is quoting 58 minutes by Piccadilly line in to the British Museum and same back.

Though could pop back to the airport and take the Elizabeth Line just for niceness...but once I'd done that I might as well just sit on the Piccadilly line.

I use to go into London a lot from Heathrow on the Piccadilly line in the old days before there were other options and remember how appallingly slow it was.

😊

I'm assured they do exist though TBH I paid the place a visit a few times and failed to find them..must have chosen the wrong days...🤐

I'll admit I've not been there for a few years but it must have changed a lot....😑

Edited

The British museum is the other side of central London. The South Kensington museums are a bit closer - V&A, Nat Hist, Science etc. 40 mins or so from Hatton Cross by Tube.

Yep, Hatton Cross > South Kensington the tube is probably the quickest and most straightforward option.

TBH been a handful years for me as well...

Osterley Park is a few tube stops from Heathrow and the house and gardens are a short walk from the station. There is - if I remember rightly - a lovely tea room there. It's probably somewhat weather dependent as the house is good but the gardens are equally good. If you wanted an afternoon activity that could be a good option.

trixeed · 30/01/2024 14:20

@BarrelOfOtters The SL7 SuperLoop bus route can quickly take you to Teddington (Broad Street) or Kingston (the Wood Street stop). Both are good for food, shopping and walks either along the Thames or into Bushy Park: https://tfl.gov.uk/bus/route/sl7/?direction=inbound

@BarrelOfOtters depending on when you are travelling and if you like "stately homes"? 😉

re-opens 20th March. By tube; Hatton Cross to Boston Manor in 18 mins

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 15:20

@PeanutAndBanana and @trixeed I'll look into both of those. If weather is nice then a walk along the Thames or into Bushy Park would be great.

Any suggestions on good places to eat if we went to Kingston or Teddington.?

@beetr00 opens too late for this trip but I'll bear it in mind for the next one.

Teddington has a villagey feel with lots of lovely independent shops, cafes and restaurants on High Street and Broad Street.

Kingston is a bigger commercial shopping centre (John Lewis etc) so it has bigger chain restaurants, plus some small ones. The area near the riverside is good for food and bars, and there is a streetfood market during the day. It also has 2 cinemas and a theatre if the weather is bad.

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 15:40

That's great, thank you.

I'd take a 15 min Uber, go for a walk in Windsor Great Park and then have dinner at the Loch & Tyne in Old Windsor. Uber back to the airport.

Or Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road, dinner in Soho, then back out again.

notimagain · 30/01/2024 16:57

Well if the OP or OP's DH don't like any of the above ideas at least their hotel is very handy for points A and B on this list....................
