When did your parent(s) concede that they were ready to give up driving

I think my parent is ready but it's an awkward conversation- how to approach?

DF - we had strong words when he had cancer. He gave up.
DM - as soon as DF died she sold the car

FIL - after I had reported him anonymously to the DVLA for dementia. They asked for his medical records, he went to see his GP who immediately told him he shouldn't be driving. Licence was posted back the same day.
MIL - still going but no concerns about her

I would quietly report to your Mum's GP.
Dementia is a condition that has to be reported to DVLA. Doesn't necessarily mean licence will be removed but in your Mum's case it sounds like you have cause for concern.
My Mum was referred for a driving assessment after a memory clinic diagnosis but decided not to do it as the assessment centre was "too far away." She has complained about it ever since. However she's also had occasional episodes of confusion, which makes me think her being off the road, whilst sad for her, is probably for the best.

The conversation has been had with the GP but we're not in the UK so those rules don't apply. Even the GP has asked her to stop driving but legally she cannot enforce it.

With FIL he didn't drive for a while as MIL took over.

His battery went flat and we managed to persuade him the car was 'broken'.

This worked for a long while until he got a mailshot from the car dealership and started going on about getting a new one. Then we decided action was needed.

If you can get the car to 'break' that might work.
