I need something when the cravings hit but I'm trying to lose weight and avoid processed sugar.

Sweet fruit like mango, watermelon, Clementine?

dancinginthewind · 29/01/2024 18:47

I've been largely off sugar since the new year. I've really noticed how sweet things like butternut squash & sweet potato are

Favouritefruits · 29/01/2024 18:48

An orange, the massive juicy ones!

frozendaisy · 29/01/2024 18:48

Pineapple

Camomile and honey tea

Yorkshire "tea with biscuits" tea, flavoured with malt and vanilla and tastes just like a dunked biscuit in tea

Have you looked at the information out there about Highly Processed Food? Just wondering if the cravings are just about sugar or about some of the other stuff in many foods?

When I fancy something sweet I like flavoured Kombucha. It’s low calorie and like fizzy drink to me.

Chocolatepuffery · 29/01/2024 18:52

I have natural yogurt (full fat) with honey

NecklessMumster · 29/01/2024 18:54

A couple of squares of good quality dark chocolate?

pizzaHeart · 29/01/2024 18:56

Very sweet tooth here.
what’s helping as a snack: decaf coffee with milk, piece of cheese, celery and soft cheese, oranges, apples, pears, blueberries, Greek style yogurt ( full fat one )
dark chocolate but dessert style 50-69 % cocoa

Itisnearlyspring · 29/01/2024 18:56

I found going cold turkey for a few weeks was the easiest way to combat my sugar addiction. I no longer crave many sweet foods but tend to have fruit and dark chocolate post meals.

Lovelydovey · 29/01/2024 18:58

A clementine. Kefir with passion fruit. Smoothie made with frozen fruit and yogurt. Fruit and cheese. Square of dark choc and some nuts.

PossumintheHouse · 29/01/2024 19:00

Natural yoghurt with strawberries/blueberries and a dash of honey is delicious, as is natural dried fruits such as mango, pineapple and apricots. The latter are high in sugar though, so you have to limit your amounts.

Also, high quality dark chocolate and pecan nuts.

Cover grapes in sugar free jelly powder and then freeze them. Utterly divine.
I'm sure the UPF brigade are sneering at this but they're a really good alternative to sweets.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/01/2024 19:02

Vanilla extract. Have it in yoghurt or mix it into the eggs for French toast.

Just seen you're trying to cut out processed sugar. So not sure if fake sugar is water you want either. Perhaps just try freezing grapes and see if that's nice?

Hey OP fellow sugar fiend here but trying to cut out as much as possible. My cravings are chocolate and creamy things (milkshakes etc)

I currently make these peanut bites which help me feel like I’m having an ice cream.

Peanut butter, Greek yoghurt, a few dates, banana, blend and freeze in silicone moulds.
I follow no exact recipe and sometimes I melt dark chocolate on them as a little extra treat but I’m trying to cut this out too.

BridgerGo · 29/01/2024 19:08

I like little snacks made by blending dates with things like cashews or oats or nut butter. Dates are quite sweet but unprocessed. Lots of recipes online and on instagram. I’ve just made a batch using about ten dates, a cup of cashews, some cacao powder and then some oats as the moisture was a bit sticky. Just put it all in a blender or food processor or an electric chopper and then it forms a dough. You can roll into little balls and keep in the fridge.

Also, Yumello do almond butter blended with argan oil. It’s delicious and a teaspoon of that hit the spot when I was trying to wean myself off my lockdown-induced sweet tooth!

Dates are my saviour haha, they keep me sane as I’m not eating processed sugar (and pregnant and apparently they help soften the cervix! Woo!)

Often find myself putting a big lump of peanut butter on a date and eating it like that - tastes like a snickers bar 😍

You have just reminded me that it is nearly blood orange season! yippee.

stayathomer · 29/01/2024 19:12

Frozen grapes, cut up apple

pickledandpuzzled · 29/01/2024 19:16

Bizzarely, cooked swede is really sweet once you’ve been avoiding actual sugar for a few days. I put leftover cooked veg in the fridge and snack on that. Some are startlingly sweet. You can blend sweet potato with a little cocoa for example.
Dates are good as they are but obviously they are high in natural sugar.
avocado and cocoa give a lovely rich truffle, especially if you can add some cream.

Persevere- your palate really does change fast.
If you aren’t that fussy, a marshmallow is a low cal chewy treat. And if you aren’t bothered by sweeteners then many drinks and sugar free jelly are good.

Darklane · 29/01/2024 19:20

Sugar free chewing gum I find is best, zero calories. Or a cup of coffee with a sweetner.
