Am I right to identify as both English and Nigerian culturally?

Born and raised in London to Nigerian Parents. (Had a little bit of childhood in Nigeria from age 2-4/5).

I was in Nigeria from age 13-21.

I then came back to London to reside.

Also when I mean English, I am talking about it in terms of a nationality and culture rather than ancestry/genetic makeup

I support England and Nigeria in football, rep both teams to the fullest.

Yes of course you are!

Deathbyathousandcats · 29/01/2024 13:09

You don’t need anyone’s permission to do that

Soapboxqueen · 29/01/2024 13:12

Agree with pp, you don't need anyone's permission.

You're just describing your reality.

JurassicParkaha · 29/01/2024 13:14

Didn't you post this exact question a few months ago? Why are you asking it again - since you had 50+ responses back then? Or did you want more provocative responses to start an online war?

Am I English or Nigerian? Both? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4956003-am-i-english-or-nigerian-both

So why continually post threads basically asking the same question?

mindutopia · 29/01/2024 13:25

Yes, that's fine. I grew up in the US and I have lived in the UK as an adult. I have both US and UK nationality (as do my dc). Culturally, yes, I consider myself to be both. But often when you sit between cultures, each one doesn't really view you as fully either.

So when I go to the US, Americans think I have a funny accent and are surprised I'm American, even though I lived there for over half my life, and I feel like a fish out of water there. British people definitely don't think I'm British as I also have a funny accent to them too, and I'm not stereotypically British in terms of mannerisms, even though culturally this is where I feel most at home. But I'm perfectly right to consider myself both as I am both - but being both means you aren't often consider fully either, which I think is what you're getting at. You always seem like a bit of an outsider to someone.

Identify as both English and Nigerian culturally? No, you ARE both English and Nigerian culturally!

willowintheriver · 29/01/2024 13:44

Low quality bait, you're going to have to come up with something fresh next time.

Logainm · 29/01/2024 13:50

Forget about the English/Nigerian thing, are you

(a) forgetful?

(b) dissatisfied with answers on all your previous threads?

(c) trying repeatedly to start some kind of debate and failing?

Zimunya · 24/05/2024 15:24

Yes, of course. You are both. No wahala.

skippy67 · 24/05/2024 15:26

Why would you ask that on here? Again. There's no right or wrong answer. Frankly, no one cares how you identify. Annoying post.
