Recommend me a kettle?

TheGreatestAtuin · 29/01/2024 12:49

God, boring thread I know... sorry!

I actually have a perfectly functional kettle, but since having a galvanic water softener fitted a few months ago, the old limescale is slowly being dissolved and coming off in small bits constantly. I have to pour the water out of the kettle via a tea strainer in order to catch all the bits. And if I forget to do this then the last few mouthfuls of tea/coffee are full of gritty flakes! 😱

I've descaled the kettle repeatedly but it's not helping.

Alas I have decided I would be better off buying a new one as I'm fed up of tolerating gritty bitty hot drinks. Also I'm interested to see if a new kettle develops any limescale buildup now we've supposedly got "well-behaved" water...

So what kettles do you lot recommend please? I'd prefer not to spend more than £50. Stainless steel or colourful options are preferred, but I'm not that picky really. Quiet, quick, and non-drippy are definitely more important.

I'm currently drinking a cup of tea sans bits, but with the strange lingering taste of vinegar and bicarb after my latest (failed) attempt to descale aforementioned kettle. Also my kitchen stinks of vinegar too. Help!

TIA

I and everyone I know has the Russell Hobbs Buckingham Quiet boil.

It look nice without being showy and is quiet. Mine has lasted over 5 years.

We have this one....

Bosch TWK5P475GB 1.7L TraBosch TWK5P471GB 1.7L Traditonal Kettle - White : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

It has a metal limescale filter, rather than a mesh plastic one, which is more resilient against limescale. It's easy to descale, and ours is about three years old and still works as good as new.

I would have recommended this hands down, we've had them for decades - BUT we've bought about 4 in the last couple of years because the spring mechanism in the lid keeps breaking. They used to be vaguely reparable, although fiddle, but have now changed the design so the whole thing is very hard to use once it breaks (and can't be repaired).

We have told Russell Hobbs plenty of times and all they do is give us a discount on a new kettle.

It makes me sick to have to buy a whole new kettle just because the lid gets tricky to open, it should be reparable really.

Barbarbarann · 29/01/2024 19:11

I suggest Sainsburys/Argos Cookworks or a Russell Hobbs. Not expensive, comes with proper warranty and lasts ages.

One of the top rated: www.argos.co.uk/product/8377058?clickSR=slp:term:kettle:3:79:1

Good luck!!

TheCraicDealer · 29/01/2024 19:16

We have this one which we got to replace a similar £19 one from Lidl. If you’re making formula feeds, like white/green/herbal teas or drinking plain warm water a la my MIL (ok fairly niche that one) the variable setting is v handy. I actually got this very one as the serviced offices my employer is based in had them in all 8 kitchens, and they were all boiled 10’s of times a day for at least five years with no issues/complaints. They were only replaced when they upgraded to those fancy coffee machines.

SgtJuneAckland · 29/01/2024 19:19

To add the last one has done 5 years in a very hard water area and only changed because we decorated the kitchen!

CaptainCachitoo · 29/01/2024 19:21

i like kettles with eg temp sensor on them and led type lights, that said due to costs mines an asda basic range one

YorkshireLass2012 · 29/01/2024 19:24

We also have the KitchenAid Artisan kettle in almond. Love the temperature control and light up features. We bought it as it was recommended as the most energy efficient so would end up saving us money in the end. Also love that it matches my stand mixer.😚

@Moier we have a haden kettle and toaster, MIL has changed hers to a haden one albeit a different style to ours, after using ours when looking after DS. Really nice quality and not particularly expensive

Girlattheback · 29/01/2024 19:38

I saw this in the shops recently, it’s beautiful, ZWILLING kettle, it will be my next kettle when my dualit one dies. My matching dualit toaster is 25 years old and still going strong so I might have a little while to wait! For longevity buy a dualit!

Sorry @Lookingatthesunset but 'I fucked it on the patio in temper...' has just made me snort while I was pretending I was concentrating on a work call 🤣

I should have added the rest of it - I'd asked 'D'H several times to take the damn thing out to the bin, and he hadn't, so I was imagining flinging it at his head....!!!

Lookingatthesunset · 29/01/2024 19:40

TheGreatestAtuin · 29/01/2024 16:29

(P.S. I want a toastie now)

If it's any consolation @Lookingatthesunset DH brought a vaguely expensive breville toastie machine and it's the worst thing in the world. Granted it hasn't blown any fuses but somehow cheese grease has gotten inside the actual machine and it keeps leaking out all over the place.

Sandwich toasters are basically bastards, but toasties are so damn nice!!

Oooh! I love the Highclere kettle, goes into kitchen to give my current kettle the evil eye.

@Lookingatthesunset 😂😂😂 this has cheered me up after a miserable Monday!

I'm now laughing too after just about everything going wrong all day, culminating in me tripping on the lead of my laptop sending it flying, along with my phone, notebok, mouse, mousemat, pen and a lamp, and only just managing to right myself before I fell into my living room!! 😎

Scared the shit out of the cat too!

@TwelveKeys @mogtheexcellent I was just coming here to say avoid the Buckingham quiet boil at all costs! Ours started making a loud high pitched squealing noise after about two weeks and we were told we needed to descale it (despite living in a soft water area). Descaling made no difference so they replaced it only for the new kettle to do the same thing after a month or so. Very annoying!

TheGreatestAtuin · 29/01/2024 19:57

Rather ironic no? 😂

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Smeg. I have this one from Smeg but mine is silver and I'm very happy with it. It's quiet and fast.

My Dualit toaster is 30 years old and still going strong. I suspect it will outlive me. 😂

TheGreatestAtuin · 29/01/2024 20:10

Ooh I do love SMEG. I wanted a SMEG fridge freezer but DH talked me out of it as they don't perform very well (or didn't 15+ years ago when we moved into our first house) but I absolutely LOVE the look of them (and anything SMEG TBH). The kettle is beautiful but I'm not sure I can justify almost £200 unfortunately.

I love some of the Haden ones. Although DH would hate the ones I like as they're all the ones with the fully removable lid, rather than a flippy lid. I can just hear him moaning about it now...

Our kettle died recently and we replaced it with this Breville Hot Water Dispenser which I am very pleased with - we went for the cheaper one because we weren't sure how we'd get on with it.

If I need more than a cupful - the only things so far have been hot water bottles and when I wanted to add hot water to a pan of pasta - I just do repeated dispenses into whatever it is.

I know it's not what you asked for, but...
