Recommend me a kettle?

God, boring thread I know... sorry!

I actually have a perfectly functional kettle, but since having a galvanic water softener fitted a few months ago, the old limescale is slowly being dissolved and coming off in small bits constantly. I have to pour the water out of the kettle via a tea strainer in order to catch all the bits. And if I forget to do this then the last few mouthfuls of tea/coffee are full of gritty flakes! 😱

I've descaled the kettle repeatedly but it's not helping.

Alas I have decided I would be better off buying a new one as I'm fed up of tolerating gritty bitty hot drinks. Also I'm interested to see if a new kettle develops any limescale buildup now we've supposedly got "well-behaved" water...

So what kettles do you lot recommend please? I'd prefer not to spend more than £50. Stainless steel or colourful options are preferred, but I'm not that picky really. Quiet, quick, and non-drippy are definitely more important.

I'm currently drinking a cup of tea sans bits, but with the strange lingering taste of vinegar and bicarb after my latest (failed) attempt to descale aforementioned kettle. Also my kitchen stinks of vinegar too. Help!

TIA

@TwelveKeys @mogtheexcellent I was just coming here to say avoid the Buckingham quiet boil at all costs! Ours started making a loud high pitched squealing noise after about two weeks and we were told we needed to descale it (despite living in a soft water area). Descaling made no difference so they replaced it only for the new kettle to do the same thing after a month or so. Very annoying!

They blamed the broken lid mechanism on scale too.... ha!

We've got a lovely Cruisinart one (in pistachio) but I'm not recommending it as a) it's above your budget and b) DH said dourly that it's "style over substance" - he's an engineer and prefers electronics to be well designed for purpose rather than appearance. It's also quite complicated for a kettle as it will heat water to different temperatures for coffee and so forth (although we only ever want boiling water, for tea) and the electronics for temperature variation has gone wrong before, necessitating DH taking it out to his lab where all our naughty electronic gadgets go before returning subdued, well-behaved electronics that don't play up any more...

The best kettle we've had is a bog-standard, perfectly simple and ordinary George one from Asda. I can wholeheartedly recommend that one! Our George one is the spare kettle and has never let the side down. Cost about £15 or something like that. (Even though it's now a spare, it's more like a twelfth man who's had a sterling career but content to be a substitute for when the star of the show falls over. Tried and tested properly, I mean.) Not a looker, but competent and reliable.

Found it, this is the best kettle we've ever had: https://direct.asda.com/george/electricals/kitchen-appliances/kettles-toasters/black-kettle-17l/050133365,default,pd.html

We've got that Asda one too (in white) and it's great. I seem to recall it was a 'Which Best Buy'. I'd avoid Bosch, they're hopeless at making kettles.

We have one of these that serves this exact purpose too. 5 house moves, 3 kids, 18 years and countless 'nice' kettles and it's still going strong! It's currently standing in and I was going to get another nice looking one, but now I think I might just buy the black version and have that!

Out of budget but if you like tech a Swan Alexa kettle so you can turn it in and boil it before you get to the kitchen Grin

BlondeBrownieBo · 29/01/2024 16:36

Ok, on it! So, what you need is 1. a cast iron kettle and 2. a swinging pot rod. Then you need to start a little campfire in your garden and gather everyone around so you can talk about your day, sing and share stories or just sit and enjoy the company, crackling fire and a cuppa

This is what I want!

Mirabai · 29/01/2024 22:25

I think this is the best kettle I’ve ever had. Don’t want to boil water in plastic,
see-through ones need constant descaling. Fast boil, quiet and streamlined.

I’ve tried expensive ones but they don’t last any longer than a good £50 job.

I bought this Kitchen Aid model in almond a year ago. I particularly wanted a stainless steel kettle as I live in a hard water area. The opening is wide enough for me to easily clean the inside and I remove the limescale with a soft sponge or washing up brush, no need for chemicals and no nasty aftertaste. I like it well enough and it pours well, but the two negatives are that it is very loud and sometimes sounds like it is going to explode and the self closing lid isn't as tight fitting as a removable lid and therefore leaks some steam when boiling.

I have the Dualit Studio kettle in black. I love it. It’s light, simple, doesn’t leak and looks good.

I have this one, too. I love the look of metal kettles but simply can't lift them without hurting my wrists. I can steady a plastic one with my other hand if something gives and it doesn't burn me.

I like that this one opens nice and wide and has an easy handle to grab. I just sometimes wish it was a little bigger because I need to boil it twice if I need water for pasta.

Teamustbefromateapot · 30/01/2024 04:57

I have this one and so do several friends in various colours (as well as matching toaster and microwave). 3 years in it is still perfect! Lightweight too.

Very keen on the Vectra as i need a LOT of tea in 30 min intervals in the morning to get me started, thanks whoever shared that. Also consider the quick dispenser. Mumsnet is so unexpectedly useful sometimes!

borntobequiet · 30/01/2024 08:33

I avoid branded goods such as kettles and toasters, having found so many of them inadequate. Current kettle and toaster are Morrisons own brand, look fine and have worked reliably for a few years now.

Blueisacolour · 30/01/2024 09:21

I'm with the PPs who love the Asda kettle. After years of buying more expensive kettles, only to have them all fail within 18 months to 2 years, I bought the Asda one linked above. It was brilliant. Since then I've only ever bought similar non branded supermarket kettles. Asda are best, Morrison's are also pretty good, and we're currently on a Tesco one. For us they have been just as nice to use and have lasted at least as long as the branded ones.

Yes high quality for the price.

It will be a lovely surprise for my family this evening 😊

I'm with the PPs who love the Asda kettle.

Prior to the smart kettle, which we've got as a bit of fun (but is useful), we've had Asda kettle's and agree with this. They really are good.

Our spare is the Asda one we used and will be used again, when the one we have now goes wrong, which you can bet will at some point.

Citric acid powder is your friend here! Fill kettle right up, boil it, and put a heaped teaspoon of citric acid powder in. Leave for ten mins and you will have a perfectly sparkling kettle again
