if MN deletes all health threads where inappropriate advice given

inappropriateportioncontrol · 28/01/2024 17:19

it's going to be pretty sparse around here and on the health board .
It might save time and interest if threads asking for advice on health matters were not allowed.
Just saying .

I’ve been feeling quite worried about the poor woman. I hope she lets us know when she’s better. But overall I felt it was a useful thread about not ignoring things.

soupfiend · 28/01/2024 18:22

Im really disappointed the thread has gone.

Whoopaday · 28/01/2024 18:24

I was on a thread that got deleted. I think this is a stupid idea, and actually anyone reading the thread can see the proper advice and people correcting incorrect assumptions and it actually helps educate people to keep them up and the OP might not want them to go/needs support/a record of a timeline etc.

TaxiVan · 28/01/2024 18:27

Not obvious to everyone though, desperate people often try anything.

To be be fair though the advice was ok for bog standard constipation.

In the OP’s case, with her history and the fact that she hadn’t been for 4 weeks it was obvious, and most who posted “self enema” or “eat kiwi fruit” were pulled up on it.

lljkk · 28/01/2024 18:27

MN threads used to all be in reverse order, the 1st post you read was the latest update. This is seeming like good thing to me, now.

Mine is still like that. You can choose.

AnnaMagnani · 28/01/2024 18:48

It would be nice if they just deleted every thread about burns.

Every one is packed with people suggesting to put oil on them.

Alwaysoneoddsock · 28/01/2024 18:48

I was worried about the constipated poster. However, I did notice a number of threads about poo this weekend and wondered if there were all genuine.

Datafan55 · 28/01/2024 18:50

This comes up when you look up the poo thread in your history;
This thread has been deleted
While folk may offer well-meaning advice, it may not be appropriate for the situation in hand. With this in mind, we've removed this so the OP can focus on seeking medical assistance.

Shouldn't have been deleted, disclaimer would have been fine. I was worrying about her and checking in to see what had happened (eg teatime gp appt today).

We never know what's genuine, I give people the benefit of the doubt unfortunately. I worried about the other post about sleep apnoea when the poster just disappeared but they don't have to update us

GoodOldEmmaNess · 28/01/2024 19:01

If mnhq had a policy of deleting bad advice, then readers would be placed at greater risk, because the fact that a post hadn't been deleted could be taken as evidence that is had been assessed by the moderators as adequate.
Much better just to keep reminding posters not to be so jaw-droppingly credulous as to follow strangers' advice without doing their own bit of reality testing

How could the poor moderators possibly keep up with any responsibility to scrutinise the adequacy of advice. It would be like requiring pub landlords to police the accuracy of all the drunken chatter in their pubs.

soupfiend · 28/01/2024 19:05

Well dont delete then either advice or the thread

Moderators dont know medical advice any more than some random on the thread.

But some people do have experience or expertise of what they're talking about

Dizzydahlias · 28/01/2024 19:16

I agree with a previous poster. By removing a thread due to the poor advice given you are setting a precedent stating that any threads left standing don’t contain any bad advice.

HappyHamsters · 28/01/2024 19:35

The bowel poster has updated us now

CaptainPickles · 28/01/2024 20:14

It does seem odd considering the amout of threads, as to the deletion of them for misinformation as pritty much most threads are mixes

Efacsen · 28/01/2024 20:20

Thanks @inappropriateportioncontrol that thread has been deleted too - MNHQ have some issues with the OP

soupfiend · 28/01/2024 20:29

She said they deleted her account.

Honestluy and the amount of shit that is normally posted day to day. Its incredible

Or are they indicating perhaps she wasnt genuine. Just occured to me. Im slow on the uptake

Did she say if she’d had a poo yet?

soupfiend · 28/01/2024 20:36

Yes a bit of one. TMI to put on here, I'll probably get banned too!

TuxedoChimp · 28/01/2024 20:37

I think people might have been reporting the OP of that thread for being the poo troll. No idea if that's true or not, but it seems mumsnet has issues with her as they've banned her.

TackyTimes · 28/01/2024 20:40

I wondered if it's just that it's easier to delete the thread then police the comments.

The second thread the poster literally said 'haha' about making a new account in order to post. That is rude, or it was a fake. Either way, not surprising it was pulled as they openly said they were a banned poster!

To progress with the conversation in this thread;
Maybe MN need an option to freeze comments apart from the OP to update. This was also suggested on the GP taking weeks to see 4yo thread.

We are invested in the health and want to know other users are ok (and feed the curiosity of the final diagnosis).

It is useful to have the health threads. The laughing toddler one has reignited this weekend where another MN user has had the same and sought advice.

WandaWonder · 28/01/2024 20:41

Are people entitled to use their own brains or does everyone have to be spoon fed every thing?

Advice on here is great sometimes but does not replace people going to an actual qualified medical practitioner

forcedfun · 28/01/2024 20:42

I got excellent advice on here from someone who has the same rare condition as me. The internet is a useful tool too

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 28/01/2024 20:53

If the OP was genuine, I hope she can come on and update us after her GP appointment. I think a lot of us are worried about her and have been checking for updates throughout the day. She was treated badly at hospital, if true.
