“Closing my collection”

I keep seeing this on Facebook advertising for clothes, homeware, jewellery “Sadly I am closing my collection with a heavy heart so I can spend more time with my family blah blah blah, please help me wind up the business by buying my last few items”

It’s all utter nonsense, right? Chinese warehouses offloading extra stock and making up son stories? How do they get away with such blatant lies?

There’s a ‘jigsaw puzzle company’ (the name may change) that has a closing down sale every few months appearing on Facebook.

My former boss has done this. She is genuinely shutting down her store. I'm out of a job I loved.

Yes, a lot of them are drop-shipping scams. If it doubt take a screenshot of the item and do a reverse image search. If it pops up in abundant supply on other retailer sites, that's the answer. 😊

Yes I've seen a few of these, currently one for Scandinavian socks, Truspilot reviews terrible and turns out to be a drop shipping storefront for poor quality Chinese imports.

It was the Scandi socks one I saw today, the amount of detail in the “personal story” was ridiculous. I recognised it because I have those socks, bought as cheap and cheerful a few years ago from an online store that didn’t feel the need to create an emotional “backstory”. (They’re fine for what they are).

What does “drop shipping” mean?

Does she describe her stock as “my collection”?

I’m sorry if this is true but this comes across as a bot post reinforcing the Facebook closing down sale bots.

Drop shipping is a business model where the business has a contract with a factory / distributor often in China and orders from the UK get sent straight to and shipped from the factory. No stock, no overheads, purely just skimming off the top.

Nice work if you can get it!

Maybe she uses "the stock".

Not sure how to prove it's true but it was a small brick and mortar store with only me as an employee so not keen to do a direct link.

I see them a lot for jumpers - generally the same basic jumper shape and background with intricate "embroidered" designs photoshopped on.

But closing down a physical store is completely different to “closing” an online collection! I did wonder how you could have possibly loved a job packing online orders.

I think your response, comparing the closure of a real-life bricks and mortar business actually exemplifies exactly the vibe they are going for- creating a fiction that some family business somewhere is closing down. It’s all psychology designed to tug at the heart strings.
