Hairdresser gone bankrupt??

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 27/01/2024 23:46

I've been to the hairdressers today, one that I have been going to since 2017. When I told a friend, she said "he's gone bankrupt." As I booked a string of appointments up to Christmas this year, and he was talking about my next appointment, I thought she must be mistaken, so I looked it up on Companies House and I found a notice that it is being wound up under the insolvency act of 1986 with a liquidator appointed as from 15 January this year (two weeks ago). Most strange!

I’m not sure what the question is

BrownTableMat · 28/01/2024 07:07

Have you seen utility prices and other overheads lately? Why are you surprised?

TheThingIsYeah · 28/01/2024 07:24

Maybe he wants to operate as a barber instead. They seem to be very profitable of late, but without the worry of any real customers.

I have noticed this. There are suddenly about six new barbers in our tiny town. What’s going on? Is it a front for something?

@AnEmbarrasmentofWitches

Is it a front for something?

Yep, and in plain sight.

Yes , money laundering.

DustyLee123 · 28/01/2024 07:32

Two barbers in my town are cash only, and one drives a Porsche 😉

DelilahBucket · 28/01/2024 07:33

Maybe he had debts and the only way to get around paying them was to close the limited company down and then just go self employed.

WandaWonder · 28/01/2024 07:36

OK and?

LittleMissSleepyUK · 28/01/2024 07:37

Did he cancel any of your appointments? If not I assume he will still be working

QueSyrahSyrah · 28/01/2024 07:43

Why is it strange? A small service business near us was advertising their Christmas offers and selling gift vouchers 2 days before they went under last year. I imagine any independent business owner would hope until the last second that they could save it, and telling their customers that they're in trouble isn't going to do that.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 28/01/2024 07:50

I don't understand what your query is either tbh.

saltnvini · 28/01/2024 07:52

Shame isn't it

transformandriseup · 28/01/2024 07:55

I'm not sure what the question is but I hope my hairdresser doesn't close. Her electric costs are through the roof though 😢.

Tattletwat · 28/01/2024 07:58

Probably will close and start again, might not want to pay their taxes.

Bawdrip · 28/01/2024 08:16

He'll have had a massive bounce back loan from when he was forced to close with no furlough. Now I bet his electricity bill has quadrupled and he's lost a few customers to the cost of living crisis so he can't pay it back. Sounds like he's continued the business under a new name so don't worry, you'll still get your hair done. Just assume the bbl was furlough under a different label.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 28/01/2024 08:20

A couple of salons have closed near me over past 6 months. I can only put it down to post-pandemic rise of overheads costs and Brexit. (In London many stylists cone from abroad) Salons aren't the only type of businesses struggling.

someoneseatenmyapple · 28/01/2024 08:52

Perhaps he's winding up the company and just going mobile?
