Rent, month in advance, how does it work?

Hi everyone,

Probably a stupid question but just wondering.
If I move to a new house and I had to pay a month in advance on the day of me moving in, say if I moved in in January. Does it mean I don't have to pay until March or does it mean I won't have to pay the last month of the tenancy contract?

Thank you

You pay a deposit. You pay your rent at the start of your tenancy, for example Jan 1. Then you pay again on February 1, mar 1, apr 1.

if you stay for a year and want to leave on Dec 31, the last rent you pay is Dec 1.

you get the deposit back after you move out and they confirm the place is ok.

Hi OP, it means you’ll be paying rent for the month ahead (sorry if this sounds obvious). It’s quite common for landlords to ask this.

Do check with your landlord when they need you to pay the rent by. It’s worth setting up a direct debit from your bank to go out from your account monthly, just to avoid you having to remember each month to pay.

When you move out of your rental place, you’ll need to give notice to your landlord (usually a month’s notice is needed, but depends your LL). You’ll already have paid for your final month before moving out because you’ll have paid it at the start of that month.

If you move in on 1 Jan and pay a month's rent then you pay the next month's rent on 1 Feb and so on. If you move out part way through a month you may only have to pay part of the month's rent on the 1st of that last month

It just means you are paying January's rent in Jan, then pay Feb on 1st Feb, you'd look to leave at the end of a month so you'd paid that month at the beginning, so if you left end of Sept, you would have paid that month's rent on Sept 1st. You're just paying in front for a service, you don't get a free bit as far as I am aware. Always look to leave the day before the rent for the next month is due.

They won't always left you off a bit of a month at the end, I did ask. I had to double pay two weeks when I moved, but the plus was that I could move in at my own pace, which was less stressful.

This is exactly correct.

Can you help me understand mine, I paid a month in advance also, i pay on the 13th it says I have to give a months on the 13th so do I still have to pay on the 13th when I’m giving notice?

murasaki · 01/02/2025 16:28

Yes, as you'd be living there for the notice period. Try thinking of it not as in advance but as up front.
