How long would you leave washing in the machine for without it needing to go on another wash?

Just curious.

I completely forgot to dry the washing I put on this morning. The machine finished and it’s just been sitting ever since, in there with the door shut. Tomorrow I will either hang it out or tumble dry it. DH thinks it will need another wash first. What does MN think?

If I do that I give it another rinse and spin, it's always fine.

Tozin · 27/01/2024 22:58

I find it’s usually ok for about 12 hours.
However in my old washer it would start to smell if not taken out immediately

Greensleevevssnotnose · 27/01/2024 22:58

Smell it and see

Oldraver · 27/01/2024 22:59

Does it smell ? I would open the door now. Mine is prone to smelling if it's left in with the door shut

Berlinlover · 27/01/2024 22:59

I would definitely wash it again.

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/01/2024 23:01

I’ve been known to leave stuff in there over a day
it’s been fine

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 27/01/2024 23:01

Unless you're in the habit of leaving washing in there (which seems to cause mould in the machine, making the washing stink if left), it will be absolutely fine!

Hang it out and let it air outside.

dementedpixie · 27/01/2024 23:02

I would take it out the machine tonight rather than leaving it in there

Newstarto · 27/01/2024 23:03

2 days

longtompot · 27/01/2024 23:03

Just a day but would sniff it and re wash if need be. It's usually the synthetic stuff that needs rewashing

pizzaHeart · 27/01/2024 23:05

Can you take it out and put in a laundry basket until tomorrow? I do this sometimes and it works especially if I quickly dry it outside afterwards.

Yes I think I’ll do that, for some reason always thought that would make it smell more but I guess not

After about 12 hours I would re-rinse

LBOCS2 · 27/01/2024 23:25

24hrs is probably the point at which it needs rewashing in my experience.

tunainatin · 27/01/2024 23:28

I think about 12 hours is ok if the door is closed

noctiscaelum · 27/01/2024 23:30

just extra rince and spin.

DinosaurOfFire · 28/01/2024 00:11

Around 24 hours, give or take a little bit. It depends how stinky/ sweaty it was before it got washed, but generally 24 hours is good. Longer than 27 hours and I would be giving it the sniff test then rewashing on a quick wash with vinegar in the load, rather than a full washing-powder load. After about 36 hours, then I would quickwash with vinegar and normal wash with a batch of powder.
