Has anyone successfully donated a mobility scooter?

My dad died before Christmas. His mobility scooter was only 3 months old and have been looking to give it away without success - so far have tried Red Cross, local hospice, disability charity in nearest major city. It probably doesn’t help that it is located in a small town in the West Country but I am surprised nobody wants it. It was very helpful for my dad and would love for it to help someone else. I know it’s difficult for charities to accept electric items. It’s just sitting there and it seems a shame

Shame you're not in the Midlands as I know somewhere that would take it, admittedly it's a Charity shop that takes pretty much everything.
I guess try a few more and hopefully somewhere will take it

YourGoatAteMyFishfinger · 27/01/2024 22:52

List it for sale and then donate the money to his favourite charity? That way someone who needs it gets the use it, and you get to donate anyway.
I’m sorry for your loss Flowers

If you’re in Cornwall my dad might be very grateful! Recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

I'm sorry for your loss.

It's very kind that you want to donate the mobility scooter!
Good luck!

Mourningbecomeselectra · 27/01/2024 22:57

I’m so sorry @DontLeanOnTheKeyboard it’s not Cornwall. Thank you @YourGoatAteMyFishfinger . Resale value is bugger all. Like 150 when it cost £1600. Thank you @Ratfinkstinkypink will look at Skiggle now

Shopmobility would be my charity of choice, if you have one near enough. They lend out their scooters, so have to be able to test and service them.

For this reason, I wouldn't expect them to have the generic problem of being unable to accept electrical items.

PerkingFaintly · 27/01/2024 23:04

BTW my local Shopmobility changed my life in terms of getting me out and about again, so I will always be enormously grateful to them and to the kind folk who volunteer there and support them.

We donated my fil chariot to an organisation which took in house clearance and redistributed the items (after a little tlc) back to those moving into council and housing association homes. They used it as a means of getting around their warehouse!
maybe literally work your way through local charities and see if one will say yes please?

I'm desperate for one! I'm a widowed lone parent with a neurological disorder but can’t afford one. May I ask what part of the country you're in please?

Mourningbecomeselectra · 27/01/2024 23:21

It is Somerset @NoOrdinaryMorning

My condolences Mourning. I unferstand - I have a very large one to donate too. Same reason, but in my case it is a lot older but still works OK and is like a small car. Nobody wants it. Been trying for ages. Derbyshire in my case. Needs a garage.

Heronatemygoldfish · 27/01/2024 23:27

Oh dear. *understand.

Mourningbecomeselectra · 27/01/2024 23:36

Good luck @Heronatemygoldfish , I hope some of these leads will be helpful for both of us

After using Shopmobility scooters for several years, I branched out and bought my own on eBay.

Although the re-sale value doesn't touch the sides of the bought-new price, then if still no joy with donating, perhaps you could use eBay as an efficient way to connect with local buyers?

caringcarer · 27/01/2024 23:56

My sister put my Mum's one on her local Neighbour site and had 3 people message the same day. She took it to a lady who was housebound with back pain and hadn't been out for over 3 months because she couldn't stand up or walk for more than a few yards. She said she's seen her riding it around a few times. We were glad someone could get some use out of it.

BestZebbie · 27/01/2024 23:59

I've bought several mobility scooters for myself and I have always bought them from EBay (collection only) from situations like yours where they were bought for someone's final months and now need to be moved on.
I think you'll find a buyer fairly quickly if you list it on there, it seems to be quite a good venue.

If you bought it from a mobility shop new, they might also offer you a nominal fee to buy it back so they can sell it 'refurbished secondhand' for a markup.

Mourningbecomeselectra · 28/01/2024 10:20

Update - a friend has found a recipient. Thanks everyone and will return to Skiggle if there are any other items.

Ah that's great news.

Sorry you're in the situation of having to do all this clearing, Mourningbecomeselectra. The "sadmin" can be so draining, on top of your loss. Flowers
