And has been drilling/banging/shifting God knows what around since September.

It's a semi detached connected to ours and quite frankly I'm sick of it.

Monday to Friday 8 til 5.30 - fine - bang away - I don't give one

But Saturday evening at 19.30 after I've been at work all week (and today) I just want some peace and quiet.

I know I need to put big girl pants on and go tell the fucker, but I've had a glass of wine, and tend to blather on at the best of times. What if I let slip what an annoying idiot he is??

Have a word with him. Construction noise has to be restricted to between 8 and 1 on a Saturday and not at all on a Sunday (8-6 weekdays) If they don't respond to you speaking nicely to them raise a complaint with the council.

If it helps Google your council noise regulations and find the relevant part about construction noise to show him.

Go have a word. Practice what you’re going to say in advance if you’re worried. Keep it simple.

’Please can you stop the drilling. It’s loud and really bothering me. Construction noise is meant to stop at 1pm on a Saturday. I’d like to have a peaceful evening. Thank you so much’

CookingFromScratchVirgin · 27/01/2024 20:07

I don't think the construction noise applies to people in their homes unfortunately.

littleblackcat27 · 27/01/2024 20:12

Thanks for suggestions everyone. Part of the trouble is, it goes quiet for quite a while - and I think 'oh, they have stopped the drilling' and then - 15/ 25/ 30 minutes later - it starts again.

But it may only be for a short time and then I'm wondering am I being too petty Confused

Posting on here isn't going to stop it - it's unreasonable you need to go and have a word

Babyboomtastic · 27/01/2024 20:17

Personally, yes I think you're being a bit petty. It's not 10pm, and it's a nightmare trying to get bits of DIY done if you work full time.

If you have young children and it's their bedtime, and they know this, then I think you'd be right be be annoyed, or if it's literally every weekend, but otherwise, unless it goes on to an unsocial hour, I'd personally just let them get on with it.

So those who work Monday- Friday are not allowed to do DIY over the weekends on their own homes???

I didn't make the law

VeniVidiWeeWee · 27/01/2024 21:45

@CastleHunter

Please quote the legislation that stops individuals working in their own home at any time. Your example applies to contractors.

littleblackcat27 · 29/01/2024 06:58

@Babyboomtastic it's been going on since September. Every day. Every weekend.

They're redoing the whole house and living/sleeping in a separate building on the property when they are there. Contractors have stuck to the times they are supposed to.

They are retired- so don't work. Some evenings the noise has gone on until 10pm. I go to bed early on certain evenings as get up at 5.30am to go to work.

I've not said a word about it all these months, but did speak out yesterday and asked for no drilling etc after 6pm, on weekends. Not really a big ask (in my view) - they stopped immediately, so issue resolved. I should have spoken to the weeks ago, but am too awkward cowardly

It depends on where you live. Different councils set their own rules about 'unreasonable noise'. Many London councils have the rules quoted by @CastleHunter but they aren't ubiquitous across the country.

In my local authority no such rules apply there is just a general statement about DIY being at a reasonable time and not excessive /unreasonable - it's a rural area and the odd bit of drilling on a Sunday is unlikely to cause people much upset.
