Afternoon all.

I've posted this in the UK Travel topic but am reposting here for traffic!

I'm looking to drive to Edinburgh from the midlands for a 3 or 4 days away in mid to late April

Looking for recommendations for suitable accommodation such as a Premier Inn or Travelodge close to the centre with parking to use as a base whilst there.

Also looking for recommended sightseeing - what's the best thing to see and where to avoid? .

TIA

What kinds of things do you like and then responses can be tailored accordingly. Do u have kids and if so, what age?

Y0URSELF · 27/01/2024 13:46

Id take the train or bus. Parking in Edinburgh is an expensive and driving around the city is very slow . The local buses are frequent and easy to use with a day pass.

Budget hotels will charge a lot of parking on site.

Heatherbell1978 · 27/01/2024 13:46

Edinburgh is a relatively small city with great transport links so you don't need to stay in the 'centre' really - you certainly wouldn't get parking in the real central Premier Inns like Princes St for example. I'd go for somewhere like Edinburgh Park which js in an office area but on the tram route and will have parking.

Edinburgh Park premier inn. Outside the centre but free park and tram or train to the centre right outside the door.

Walkthelakes · 27/01/2024 13:48

We stay at the premier inn In Leith. You can get the bus from right outside into the city. Takes about 20 minutes x

Windymcwindyson · 27/01/2024 13:49

We stayed in a place 1 easy mile walk away. Airbnb with the host living there but we never saw her! Huge terrace up a few flights. Best week end.

OurfriendsintheNE · 27/01/2024 13:51

Alternative would be to ditch the car at a park and ride and stay somewhere central. You’ll not need the car to get about while you’re there.

Thank you everyone for your replies so far.
In response to a previous poster it'll just be me and my husband. The children are staying with their grandparents.

We like history, good home cooked style food, markets (not food/fruit & veg style) and maybe a whisky or two! Smile

But why not let people reply to your original post? There's plenty of traffic on the holiday boards.

RoséProsecco · 27/01/2024 14:06

Village hotel - near the Botanib gardens & Stockbridge/Comely bank - on good bus routes.

Or there's plenty places around Edinburgh park which is on the tram line.

BIWI · 27/01/2024 14:07

Anyhow. I'd recommend either the Premier Inn, or The Hub (by Premier Inns, which is next door) in East Market Street, in the Old Town. No idea about parking as we went on the train.

Fleetheart · 27/01/2024 14:08

Personally I am keen on the PI on Princes St, a beautiful view of the castle and very handy for everything. Not cheap particularly of course but lovely and friendly

lynnie75 · 27/01/2024 14:11

Premier Inn Edinburgh Park. It's the airport side of the city BUT you are literally steps away from the trams that take you directly into the city centre AND there is a car park on site with ample parking for guests. My daughter is studying at Edinburgh University and we stay there when visiting her.

MsInterpret · 27/01/2024 14:11

Assuming you have good reason to drive, but if not I'd echo the encouragement to go by train. Station is right under the castle, slap bang in the middle of the city.

Taxis not too expensive and bus/tram network excellent.

Iggi999 · 27/01/2024 14:11

I would go properly city centre so you don't waste ages each day on a bus getting in to the sights. A park and ride for the car.
What to see - off top of head - royal mile, Holyrood palace, the castle, grassmarket (they're all in the same area, and a lot of pubs around), could do zoo or botanic gardens, tram down to the Shore at Leith and could go to Britannia, the royal yacht. Shopping on George Street or in St James Quarter.

ClydeBank · 27/01/2024 14:33

I would also suggest you stay centrally especially if it is just you and your husband- u cd find an affordable double room. it’s such a beautiful city – nice to step out of a hotel and be surrounded by beautiful architecture. Edinburgh park area is pretty soulless.

It’s a very easy city to get around - u might find you don’t need to get a tram or bus anywhere if u like walking.

good places to go to include the castle, Holyrood palace, the portrait Gallery, the Gallery of modern Art, national museum, the Botanics (have a wander in Stockbridge whilst there - lots of independent shops), climb Arthur’s seat. Lunch at Harvey Nics for the view. eat and drink at the whiski rooms. Grassmarket and Victoria street for shops, cafes and restaurants. Quite a lot of the best eateries are not bang in the centre of town so once you know where you are staying, post again for restaurant recommendations. Have a great trip 😀

LIZS · 27/01/2024 14:36

There is parking at the Omni centre and a PI on St James Quarter/York Place almost opposite across the other side of the square. Trans stop very close and less than five minutes walk from Princes Street.

Perihelion · 27/01/2024 15:17

The Omni is £26 per day to park. Which actually seems quite reasonable...
Driving in the centre cam be a total nightmare, depending on timing.
If you gave to drive, do park and ride.
Unless you're on a tight budget, I wouldn't want to be in a hotel at Edinburgh Park.

Groovee · 27/01/2024 15:19

I'd recommend Premier inn in Leith or at Edinburgh Park then jumping on the tram into the city centre. Parking is extortionate in town. Edinburgh is quite compact once in the centre.

MissHoollie · 27/01/2024 15:27

I'd recommend.patking at somewhere like fountain park .. I think around £8 for the day. Free is you use one of the food outlets etc.
A 15 min walk to princess street.
Buses V good and trams too.
Enjoy

MissHoollie · 27/01/2024 15:28

There are a few hotels around fountain park area too

LlynTegid · 27/01/2024 15:31

Look at options of places to stay near to the tram. Such as near the airport, the non-central options are usually cheaper.

onemoretine · 27/01/2024 15:54

I've stayed at the premier inn at Edinburgh park a few times and recommend it as well. Some of the rooms also have a view of the castle from a distance and it's super handy for the tram/train

Inyourwildestdreams · 27/01/2024 16:01

The Village hotel has good parking and is a quick bus ride to the city centre 😊👍🏻 Mal Maison in Leith too.

We had 2 recent stays in the city centre where we had the car with us too and used Apex Grassmarket and Radisson Blu on the Royal Mile which both had paid parking on site 😊

Might be dearer than PI/TL etc but just some other options with parking. We’ve previously had really hope deals at them all 😊
