Well orderd to pay rather than fined and dollars not pounds. For defaming the woman who accused him of sexual assault. Which surely means the jury elieves he sexually assaulted her. Why has he not been charged with that?

Could it be the same in this country if a criminal case fails the person can bring a civil case. It happened in Scotland when David goodwillie lost his civil case against him for rape.

CormorantStrikesBack · 26/01/2024 22:41

Yes, I suppose a civil case is easier to win. I really hope this means he won’t become president again but God knows.

He really is a vile individual and a lunatic to boot.

Northernsouloldies · 26/01/2024 22:44

David goodwillie is/was a footballer in Scotland.

CormorantStrikesBack · 26/01/2024 22:45

I wonder if he’ll pay? I wonder if he has that sort of cash or will he have to sell Trump Towers.

If Trump does become president again I would not like to be the presiding judge in this case!

She didn’t come forward at the time of the actual rape believing that she’d be dismissed as an exaggerator (probably correct) so the statute of limitations would have expired to charge him criminally (you only have 20 years). Also you’d need physical evidence to win a criminal conviction (non available since she didn’t report at the time).

As to whether she’ll ever see a dime, I doubt it. He’s a master at claiming bankruptcy and what not to avoid paying his debts.

Carnerloyle · 26/01/2024 22:51

Last year he was found guilty of sexual assault and subsequently defaming Carroll when he denied it. I think this trial was just to decide the damages, if he had harmed her by what he said and any punitive damages.

Brahumbug · 26/01/2024 22:52

I don't know about the USA, but in the UK, the burden of proof for a civil case is lower than a criminal case, usually balance of probability rather than beyond all reasonable doubt.

Cesarina · 26/01/2024 22:56

The fact that he could yet again become the president of the USA would be laughable if it wasn't a real possiblity.
In a country of around 335 million people, why can't it find anyone better than that prick to be its next leader?

Seems every court case against him makes him MORE popular though. Also, rape/sexual assault, his fans will definitely blame the women/not believe her,

Looks like this is the case but it’s all been civil cases. I really wish he’d be charged criminally and locked up https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/07/19/trump-carroll-judge-rape/

Sexually assaulted at 53. I did not think Trump would go for mature ladies.🤐

It's beyond belief, isn't it?

Bululu · 26/01/2024 23:14

I guess this is why people settle out of court. Innocent or guilty.
