Do you have a ds age 14-17? What are they thinking about doing after leaving school?

Just curious and looking for ideas as ds hasn’t any idea currently. He seems to be quite good at most subjects, not particularly drawn to anything.

The Army.

Want them ripe for war. Ain't no messing around here.

Close friends kids in that age group are planning aeronautical engineering at uni next year, one intends to apply to do medicine, one is considering doing mechanical engineering (dreams of working in formula 1) and one fancies joining the police, preferably without going to uni first!

We're looking at college courses for next year just now. Definitely wants to leave school - would start the course at 17.
Interested in joinery - I think this could be a good job choice given I've never found a joiner without a long waiting list, but I'm not really sure!

Dc is undecided, he is doing GCSEs this year. He knows he wants to do A levels and was a bit undecided about his subjects but has now provisionally chosen maths, fm, physics and chemistry.

caringcarer · 27/01/2024 16:36

17 year old is doing a 2 year 3 X level 3 Btecs in Sports Performance and Coaching. He wants to be a cricket coach. He is doing his coaching awards through the 2 years.

@Jimmyspiano My nephew who sounds very similar studied Health and Social Care (after a few false starts) and is now a care worker, by all accounts (and I can believe it) beloved by the families he works with. Only downside is the pay.

PrideOfBritain75 · 27/01/2024 16:44

Aviation Ground Crew Specialist OR Electronics Technician.

Not exclusively destined to serve within the Army of course, but to be equally inclined to embrace such occupational prospects if the inclination so desires.

PrideOfBritain75 · 27/01/2024 16:48

Joinery is a great career choice!

Jimmyspiano · 27/01/2024 16:49

Darkenergy, I think my DS would be brilliant in that kind of work. He is lovely with young children, and he loves to chat to everyone. I will definitely encourage him to consider health and social care. He is really tall and will probably end up well over six foot. I wondered if being a porter in a hospital would be an option for him.

Ds is lower 6th. He wants to go for an apprenticeship, probably in coding, possibly engineering.

EasternStandard · 27/01/2024 16:52

Oldest is doing engineering degree already

Middle likely to go with maths (or related) degree

cheezncrackers · 27/01/2024 16:53

A levels, gap year (because he's fed up of being at school), then uni (probably to study economics).

Echobelly · 27/01/2024 16:59

DC (15) is doing GCSEs this year, expecting grades at the top end. They are going on to 6th form (their school doesn't have a 6th form so they'll have to change settings), and then university. They've changed their minds a few times about degrees - they were leaning towards psychology, but now more to history/politics, but a degree involving psychology not out of the question.

At the moment their dream job is opera singing and they've done some professional classical singing already - if they do that they might do a voice post-grad at one of the music colleges after university. That's generally seen as a good route in rather than a music undergrad.

HippyChickMama · 27/01/2024 16:59

Ds is currently in lower sixth, studying for A levels in history, politics and film studies. He's planning to go to uni to do a BA in history and politics (his favourite subjects) and then he wants to do PGCE to be a primary school teacher. It's been his plan for years, he loved his work experience at his old primary school.
Dd is in her last year of primary and currently wants to be a theatrical costume designer as she's discovered an interest in historical fashion

@EastendersMate sorry what do you mean? You want to prepare them for war?

I'm not understanding the correlation between being tall and being a hospital porter?

Chocolatelover13 · 27/01/2024 17:24

DS 16 wanted to be RAF pilot but asthma means that’s not possible so he’s had to reconsider his choices. For the last couple of years he’s decided he wants to be a doctor.

brawhen · 27/01/2024 17:27

DS1 will go to uni for civil engineering - he likes the idea of engineering and outdoors.

DS2 choosing Higher subjects - maths & science stuff. He likes being surly and playing computer games. Hopefully he'll come out the grumpy teenage phase and choose something constructive in a couple of years time! Probably uni. I think he will probably enjoy maths & computing more once he gets to learn it at a higher level. He is v academically able but not very excited at school at the moment.

Stormysundaymorning · 27/01/2024 17:28

My friends ds did a plumbing apprenticeship. Loving it and no student debt. He's mid 20s now and earning loads.

Jimmyspiano · 27/01/2024 17:49

Hellocatshome, I just thought that being big and strong would making moving people, beds and equipment around easier. I am very short and I know it makes pushing a wheelchair or shopping trolley a little harder. The main reason I thought my DS could make a good porter is that he is always cheerful, friendly and happy to have a chat. His size seemed like an added extra that might help. I could be totally wrong of course.

The porters in our hospital are also our security so being a tall, physically capable looking man is useful.

Tumtr -I would assume they’re being facetious?
