Does anyone else have music playing in their head all the time?

I was chatting to a friend just now and I mentioned in passing that the music in my head was particularly loud today. She was really taken aback and told me that this isn't normal. It's got me wondering how many other people constantly have music playing in their head, apart from when there's external music playing. It's usually something I've listened to recently but random songs do pop in occasionally as well. I just had Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth which I don't think I've heard for years. Music is just always there in the background and it's complete songs or sometimes albums; it isn't like earworms where you get 20 seconds of something annoying playing over and over again. It also isn't mistakable for externally-played music so it isn't a condition such as MES where you get auditory hallucinations.

I know my DH has exactly the same thing and I'm pretty sure my dad did as well because he was always walking around singing random stuff like Gilbert and Sullivan songs but he never listened to anything like that. Does anyone else experience something similar or is it as unusual as my friend says?

Yes and it's worse when im stressed and then I have to avoid listening to music as I end up with ear worms that wake me in the night. They tend to last 2-3 weeks before they fade and then I'm left with the normal 'low level' soundtrack of bits of songs/phrases etc. Suspect I'm ND and also suspect my daughter is

migigo · 26/01/2024 17:46

Yes, it varies by genre, but yes I can also heat my soundtrack Grin. Just the way I'm made. I actually cannot stand silence, probably why

KittensandPerverts · 26/01/2024 17:46

Me! Music or sometimes clips from TV shows. My mind is never, ever clear.

Nicky Minaj was banging through my head on the train on the way home.

🎵Can't stop, we're higher than a motherfucker! 🎵

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 26/01/2024 17:47

The only sure way I can avoid catching ear worms from listening to music is to do it while I'm running

Cardiganwearer · 26/01/2024 17:48

I can choose the song I “listen” to. Came in very handy when I was having a root canal done the other day.

migigo · 26/01/2024 17:50

Not adhd here either but am dyslexic Hmm

mumto3boysHE · 26/01/2024 18:01

It is (mostly) absolutely silent in my head! 😁
I don't hear music or songs, apart from an ear worm sometimes. I don't have an internal monologue of my thoughts that I can hear. I do have a brain (honest 🤣), and it is used all the time but there is no noise.

My thoughts are silent, just like when I'm reading, I don't hear the words out loud in my head.

It's quite peaceful...

Balloonhearts · 26/01/2024 18:34

Thank you. For getting Gilbert O'Sullivans greatest hits stuck in my head.

willowstar · 26/01/2024 18:39

Absolutely. Music is a constant companion in my head and my husband is the same. We often ask each other what we have in our heads. I can't imagine life without it. I also have the constant internal chats with myself and others though I often vocalise these which in effect means that I talk to myself. It is a bit embarrassing.

DC1 has this - it used to really irritate them in exams etc as it would sometimes break their train of thought. Luckily it goes away when they play something/ is replaced by what they are playing (given they are at conservatoire it could be tricky if it didn't). I saw an interview with Simon Rattle once where he said he had this and it was just a load of music junk floating around in his head.

VeryQuaintIrene · 26/01/2024 17:34

Constantly as well. I sing in a choir so it's often random alto parts. I am not the smallest bit ADHD, however.

This made me laugh - I did Bach's St John Passion a year ago and my head was just full of random phrases from the alto part for weeks (although probably more earwormy than anything else). I was training for the London Marathon so I sometimes had 18 miles of it.....

ChaToilLeam · 26/01/2024 19:09

I have a perpetual jukebox in my head. It never, ever stops. Also suspected ADHD 😬

Spendonsend · 26/01/2024 19:13

I have beautiful orchestral pieces playing in my head a lot of the time. But they arent pieces i know.

MeinKraft · 26/01/2024 19:15

I've currently got the song from Tabby mcTat playing in my head. Recently when I've been about to fall asleep the jazz solo from Baker Street has popped into my head to annoy me. Then I try to oust it with the slightly less irritating jazz solo from Careless Whisper and spend the next 3 days singing oh I'm never gonna dance again

SausageRollsWithMustard · 26/01/2024 19:20

Now it's Blue Monday.

Heartofglass12345 · 26/01/2024 19:20

All the time! I've asked a couple of people about it and only one other has said yes.
It really gets on my nerves as sometimes it can just be one or two lines from a song over and over again, or a song that I don't even know the words to! I sometimes have to watch something on my phone to help me go to sleep when it's particularly distracting in the nights.
I did read that it could be anxiety related.

Itsanicedaytostartagain · 26/01/2024 19:21

Every day.
Currently have Cool and the Gangs ‘Celebration’ in my head - it’s like having my own personal DJ in there!
I have many screens and audios going off in my head all the time.
I didn’t realise it’s not your average human experience until I was discussing it with friends.
Not sure if it’s a neuro divergent thing or not but I am on a waiting list for an ADHD assessment.

I have the internal chats all the time too.
I also do this thing regularly where I talk to my internal psychologist/therapist, kind of getting all my woes off my chest only I often say it all out loud, usually when I’m in my car. People used to look at me strange when next to them in traffic but at least now with hands free I can just pretend I’m actually talking to a real person!

TrtseHkpr · 26/01/2024 19:26

Yes, I call it my internal jukebox. It mostly plays songs from when I was in my teens/twenties, but also random classical tunes and sometimes (very annoying) songs,I really dislike.

PudgeControlsTheWeather · 26/01/2024 19:28

Yep. I always think of it as my internal jukebox and I quite like it, most of the time. It's a bit distracting in meetings and such but it's generally quite nice. It only annoys me when it plays me snippets of songs or pieces of music, rather than whole things!

Talkinpeace · 26/01/2024 19:30

Yes.
Not ADHD. Not Dyslexic.
Do have tinnitus so the songs keep it at bay.

Oops, I did it again.

Also have constant internal chats which I have to try hard not to do out loud. Sometimes the chats get stuck on the same line on repeat, over and over and its really hard to get out of it.

Natsku · 26/01/2024 19:36

I've often wondered if I have ADHD but never been diagnosed

DahliaMacNamara · 26/01/2024 19:39

I was going to say no, then I 'heard' the track that was playing in my head. I don't even know what it's called, and I certainly didn't summon it up.

SuperFurryCat · 26/01/2024 19:41

Yes I do. I have never bought headphones for music because I don’t need them, it’s all there playing in my head. And if someone is speaking and inadvertently say a line from a song that song stays in my head on repeat all day!
