Cluster rings - are they a good idea?

Sadly, diamonds fall out of my cluster ring ALL THE TIME. I have only had it for 9 months and 3 have already fallen out.

I went into the jewellers today and they have given me the option to either get a refund or pick out a new ring.

I love solitaire rings but in true diva style only if it's a big ass diamond that stands out (which we cannot afford haha).

So the other option is another cluster ring in hope that mine is just 'bad one'.

I've been told that with cluster rings, though they look pretty and tend to look like you are getting a lot for your money, they are prone to diamonds falling out as the tiny diamonds along the side are basically just stuck in with glue, instead of the 'claw'.

Am I just setting myself up for the same problem if I choose a different cluster ring? Should I just get a small solitaire?

I have a sort of a cluster ring 16 diamonds & an emerald. The stones are set in a channel setting not prongs & I have no issues with them at all. Maybe explore other types of clusters?

I think with clusters they are little chips of diamonds and liable to fall out/get lost. This wouldn't happen with a larger stone and it would keep it's value better. I would get a solitaire in a pretty setting if I were you.

I have a cluster ring that was DH great grandmothers. I did catch quite badly on a car recently (having worn it for years) and a stone dropped out - managed to find it and it is being repaired. The jeweller did tell DH it was lucky I found the stone as they dont cut them in the same way anymore so hard to replace and fit properly.
I assume that as they have become less fashionable jellwery makers just havent bothered keeping up the same standard for them?

I have this cluster type ring. If you look at the side shot picture it has many many 'claws'. Never had a problem with it and I'm pretty violent with my hands🤣

Your cluster ring sounds badly made. The diamonds should be held securely by claws or pushed over metal. There is absolutely no way they should be held by glue. If they are then that is truly shocking for an expensive ring.

I would take the refund and buy elsewhere.

No decent jewellery would glue diamonds of any size into a ring.

I'd get a refund and go elsewhere

I'd get a refund and buy a pre-owned ring from an eBay jewellery shop where you often get a certificate of authenticity and it clearly states grade and size of diamond. You can get a lot more for your money if it's pre-owned. I've bought some beautiful pre-owned gold rings with diamonds and/or gemstones.

I've had my cluster engagement ring for over 20 years.
It's the setting, you need to make sure it's quite a high setting so that the prongs hold the diamonds in securely. I worked for a high end jeweller and the diamonds should be fine if they are set correctly, I would get the refund and go to another jeweller to be honest.

I have a cluster ring and have never lost any diamonds. They really should not be stuck on with glue!

Here is my ring. It wasn’t super expensive either and from H Samuel.

(Ignore my growing out nails!)

Take the refund and run!

HermioneWeasley · 26/01/2024 17:53

Take the refund and use the money to buy a good sized lab diamond or moissanite if you like a big sparkly stone
