If you cut a food in half (ish!) for ease of eating…

Do you eat the bigger half or the smaller half first?

Eating burgers tonight and realised I always go for the smaller half first and DP the bigger so he can go back for the “extra” bit later (I did explain that it’s not extra just, y’know, the meal but I was scoffed at!)

(this obviously does not apply if you’ve perfected the art of food cutting ratio)

Bigger half... no idea why!

Scampuss · 26/01/2024 14:56

Smallest/least appetising part first. Always the best last. Just cut a wanky cupcake into quarters and saved the biggest piece with the best filling: topping: cake ratio for last.

@Scampuss What's a 'wanky' cupcake?

Isitisit · 26/01/2024 14:58

Always take the bit I want - I don’t trust that the rest won’t get scoffed before I get to it!

Oh yes also the least appetising first!

I did this with a wanky doughnut the other day and dropped the last, best bit on the floor. What a shocking disappointment !

@Scampuss What's a 'wanky' cupcake?

One that's more style than substance, generally.

This was a Lola's gluten free red velvet cupcake and, to be fair, it was very nice, but too much frosting (a common theme with wanky cupcakes).

Oh no! That would be very disappointing.

Best looking bit first, in case I run out of steam and don't want to eat the whole thing. Particularly applies to hot food that won't reheat well.

Freesiabritney · 26/01/2024 15:26

Always most appetising first incase I accidentally fill myself up on the non appetising bit and miss the good bit!

When I was a child to counteract bickering between my sister and I, when we were sharing food there was a policy of one cuts and the other chooses. As a result I have become incredibly good at cutting things equally.

I do however save the best looking bit until last, and for some reason with a sandwich which I always cut in too quarters, I eat the bits with the top crust first.

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 26/01/2024 15:35

I definitely leave the "best" bit until last. What determines the "best" bit can be anything - the smallest, but crunchiest bit of a roast potato, or the biggest bit of a burger that looks like it's got the perfect mix of sauce, cheese and salad in it.

I make all our meals, so always choose the best bits for myself, even if it means giving myself the smaller bits! Chef's prerogative and all that!

Westfacing · 26/01/2024 15:38

Smallest piece first, so have the bigger bit to look forward to!

AmyandPhilipfan · 26/01/2024 16:44

I'm not too sure to be honest, but if I make a sandwich and cut it in half I always eat the part with all straight crust first as, for reasons unknown even to me, I prefer eating the half with the rounded crust and so save it til last so I can look forward to it!
