It's so difficult for whoever succeeds him, though - how do you fill Jurgen Klopp's boots? I think Pep Lijnders would have taken over if Klopp had seen out his contract to 2026, so it's a shame that he is also leaving as the continuity would have been good. I totally get it, though.
Had Gerrard stayed at Rangers and continued to be successful there, then I think he would have been the natural pick. Unfortunately, he looked so hopelessly out of his depth at Aston Villa that I don't think he is a realistic option at least for now. Xabi Alonso has been very impressive indeed at Bayer Leverkusen this season, and he has that connection with the club that will mean he has the goodwill of the fans and they would also likely be patient with him. I don't know if he will feel ready to make that change right now - we will all be watching this space!
Otherwise, I reckon there will be a lot of speculation re Roberto Di Zerbi.
Whoever comes in, one thing is for sure: this truly is the end of a magnificent era in more ways than one. The players we have and recruit, and the way that we play, are totally reflective of the manager; these things are, naturally, going to change with a new person in charge.
