Does this water bill sound right?

I'll start by saying I struggle with maths so this is hard for me to work out. I will contact the water company today but just wanted to see if other people thought this looked right or not.
I'm with Thames water.
Past water bills for 160 day period = £160
Most recent bill for 265 day period = £300

I have used water exactly how I always have. Thought I was being less wasteful actually.

Does this look right? The fact that the bill is for a longer period than usual has confused me.

Are you on a meter or Rateable Value bills?

FunOverload · 26/01/2024 08:30

Meter

You were paying £1 per cubic metre on the old bill. You are paying £1.13 per cubic metre with the new bill. (I'm ignoring any standing charges for simplicity).

Per day surely?

It looks about right.

At the same use and price you'd be paying £265 for 265 days. It's gone up just over 10% which would fit with an increased tariff or a little more use. It doesn't look like an error.

Thames water rates went up 11.6% on average in April, so that's your difference

Not withstanding a rise in bills, why not check your water meter (in the path outside) to check for a leak?

Turn everything off (that uses water) in the house, look down water meter hole (take a torch with you) and if it’s still whirring away you’ve got a leak.

Your meter will be located under a approx 6” square cover which can be lifted with a strong screwdriver if it’s stiff to lift.

It's showing your usage has increased.

Either way, as said before check your water meter. You don't have to check the one in the road, you can check the one in your house. Make sure everything is turned off and see if any of the dials are moving. If you're not sure whether one is moving marginally, take a meter reading before everyone leaves house for a few hours or before everyone goes to bed (obviously don't flush toilet/wash hands in the night) and then take it again on return/in the morning. If it's moved, chances are you've got a leak. If you have got a hidden leak, are you getting more condensation in one room than expected, are there bugs or even slugs in any part of room where pipes might run under - that might help you locate the problem.

When ours went up unexpectedly we had a leak. It went up a lot more than yours though!

Do you live alone?

Thanks everyone.

As you say, it's harder to compare with different numbers of days.

So it might be useful to know: if you were paying for 160 days, the latest bill would come out at £181.

£18 of that increase would be explained by the rise in rates. So you would be looking at about 2p a day difference after that.

Most people use more water in summer. If this is your bill since March / April it includes all the summer months. The one before would have included none.

I agree with others that you should keep an eye on your meter to see if you are making savings on water usage. You will probably feel them more in the next bill if you are. But this bill looks right to me.

Does seem like a lot though - we have a 5 bed house with 2 kids, everyone showers/bathes at least once a day, washing machine on daily etc. We pay £400 per year!

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/01/2024 16:01

@Papillon23 ...yes!

You would never believe that I worked for a water company, would you? (My excuse is that it was a bit early in the day for me and my brain wasn't functioning. )
