What is your daily / weekly housekeeping routine?

My basic routine is to daily make beds, give the bathroom a quick hoover (with a handheld thing I have upstairs) and wipe. To clean up kitchen, wipe surfaces, hob, sink cooking after eating, wipe round bins if emptying that day, sweep floor, use carpet sweeper in hall. Quick dust and straighten downstairs rooms up, plump cushions on sofa.

I wipe out the fridge every week when my shopping delivery comes. I hoover properly and damp dust twice a week more often if it really needs it. I will do a deeper clean of each room or area once a month or so (loosely based on flylady zone cleaning). So things like cleaning oven, washing mirrors, windows, skirting and doing any decluttering or reorganising needed.

I do a washing every other night timed to come on in the am before we get up and I hand it up when I get up. I do towels once a week but I change them out more often than that. I change the bedding at least every two weeks, more often in summer as its easier to dry them. Neither of us are sweaty at night, we shower in the evenings before bed and wear pj's which we change more often.

I usually clean the bathroom when I am in it so use the karcher after my shower and I wipe the floor each time I change out the towels and bath mat. I wipe the loo and sink everyday.

It is just the two of us, three bedroom house but quite smallish. Fairly easy to keep ticking over as long as I keep to my schedule. I am saying I but DH does all of this as well, we just split it between us as we go.

We usually do things like paint touch ups, repairs in the spring as needed like sanding and oiling our worktops.

Mostly it is all very routine and doesn't feel too much most of the time!

What is your routine for your house?

This is really interesting, wish more people could have posted a response. I am looking for advice can’t add much at this stage.

Well, at the other end of the spectrum, I have 3 children, a dog, and a fairly large old house that needs renovating. Both DH and I work full time.

We clean things when we have time! And we never stop picking up / tidying things… We each do our best to hoover at least part of the house once a week. The kitchen surfaces are wiped down about twice a day, as is the kitchen floor. Bathroom is cleaned when it looks grimy (frequently!) as are windows. Laundry goes on at least once a day, often twice a day , often set before going to bed as part of the usual household chores before bed -daily is essential if we are all to have clean clothes and sports kit on the necessary PE and football days; towels and bedding bump it up to 2-3 washes on some days.

I honestly don’t know anyone who has a cleaning “method” or a formal plan, although I appreciate the internet is obsessed with them. I guess maybe they may be helpful for people with lots of unstructured time on their hands, and a small household. For everyone else, isn’t it just a case of “get on with as much of what you know needs to be done as you can fit into the limited time available”? Then dash off to the next child drop off / pick-up / work commitment / collapse into bed exhausted ?

5 of us here, dp myself, dd18, dd13 and ds13 - not forgetting our little dog.

dp works full time I am part time.

hoover downstairs twice a day (trust me we need to). Hoover upstairs 2/3 times a week.

Dust downstairs once/twice a week. Upstairs bedrooms tend to get antibacterial wiped not dusted.

Bathroom and en-suite once a week, but tbh bathroom should be every other day.

I do 2/3 loads of washing a day. Like op, windows etc once a month.

Bedding every week, we all bathe before bed and wear pjs.

Floors mopped daily downstairs.

kitchen cleaned after breakfast, lunch and tea. Tea proper clean rather than just wiping tops etc

Flyladyish here too.
Lounge and kitchen put to bed nightly
Bathrooms swished and swiped daily
Quick hoover daily and floors mopped with a spray and mop thingy
Bathmats and towels changed on a Monday
Lounge damp dusted Tuesday
Beds changed on a Thursday
Bedroom damp dusted Thurs
Stairs hoovered on Saturdays
Washing/ ironing every other day
Weekly zone work eg this week is bathrooms so we will wash and change shower curtain, clean out wet room drain, clean out bathroom cabinet, wipe light fittings, pop sink cleaner in overnight, damp dust ceiling etc.

We clean once a week. Upstairs week one, downstairs week two. Sometimes we don’t bother. Life is too short.

I clean everyday, little and often suits me. I could not spend a whole day just cleaning.

I tidy and clean as I go, ie. clean sink or empty dishwasher while waiting for the kettle to boil. While chatting on the phone to sis or DD, I will have a damp e-cloth in my hand and be wiping down some skirting boards. Towels are changed twice a week and bedding once a week. I vacuum through the house once a week and hard floors are washing over twice week. I never go up or downstairs empty handed. Luckily we are all tidy and put things away. Everything has its place.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 17/02/2024 04:53

We don’t spend all day cleaning, a couple of hours at most. I can’t believe how much time people spend on cleaning. 🤷‍♀️

Family of 5, house over 3 floors

Have a reminder task system for jobs that are not obvious.

Bathrooms sat morning - DH
Dusting weekly
Windows monthly
Proper top to bottom hoover weekly - DH
Mopping usually weekly
Sheets and towels fortnightly

Laundry -me - as required. Most days

Ad hoc obvious jobs - eg everything else gets done as required.

Spring clean which includes wiping skirting boards - once a year.

Cleaning is not a main event in our house either.

Make beds every morning, strip beds every week unless spring/ summer when it’s clean sheet and pillowcases every day, hoover every day, clean upstairs toilet every morning and clean shower every night after we have used it, kitchen gets cleaned every night after I cook tea and wash dishes, dust 3/4 times a week, that’s husband’s job, for some strange reason he likes to do it!!
laundry load put on every night after we shower and clean towels every night, fresh for a shower

We do have a routine otherwise it doesn't get done!

Laundry is as it needs doing (normally a wash every couple of days). Same with emptying bins.... just whenever they need to be done.

Kitchen surfaces get a quick wipe down every evening after dinner

Living room is always tidied every evening when DDs go to bed and before DH and I sit down for the evening.

Hoover both upstairs and downstairs on a Monday as well as change bedding and towels.

Tuesdays clean the bathrooms.

Wednesdays to Fridays we just keep on top of it as best we can as they're our busiest days

Saturday mornings DH and I alternate, one of us helps DDs with their homework and the other gives the kitchen a proper clean and dusts.

Sunday we rest!
