Plantar facilitis question?

Forgot to ask and podiatrist forgot to say. I can't get hold of them either to ask?
I have got my first pair of orthotics and I'm wearing them to see how I get on, then report back in a few weeks.
Do I still need to be doing exercises and rolling the ball across my foot or do I see how I go?

I’d continue to do them if you’re still sore. The insoles are an adjunct rather than a cure. Sadly there’s no quick fix with PF but hopefully your feet feel better soon.

girlfriend44 · 25/01/2024 20:52

Thanks, have you got it?
Anyone else have experience with new insoles?

Do the exercises gently.

I just buy shoes and sandals with good arch support now, always wear slippers indoors. Going from sitting or lying down to standing without footwear I find is most damaging.

Brands to try Strive and Vionic.

WetBandits · 25/01/2024 21:16

Carry on with the rolling (I used a spiky tumble dryer ball!) and never go barefoot unless you are in bed, the bath or the shower. Any other time, you must have supportive footwear on!

I had it in both feet for 6 months and cried every day with the pain, I hope it resolves quickly for you!

VikingLady · 25/01/2024 22:22

Keep doing them in perpetuity, I'm afraid. The more you do them, the more it reshapes/tightens what's needed in your feet, and the fewer/less agonising future attacks will be.

It's been 15 years since my first severe attack, and it's almost gone since I started doing the exercises more often. I do them in the shower.

HenkIshaJocelyn · 25/01/2024 23:05

Keep doing the exercises!
I had crippling PF in one foot for the best part of a year. I did the exercises religiously, changed my footwear, rolled it, didn't go barefoot etc it took a long time, but much better now.

Ariela · 25/01/2024 23:24

Yes, but actually what really helped me was before I got up, lying flat on back on bed, raise leg to ceiling with foot flat and then pointing toes towards me, hold and repeat about 10 times each leg.

After 18 months I paid to get Shock treatment, it work , still do stretches every day.

CreateHope · 25/01/2024 23:40

@Nanalisa60 what is shock treatment? I’ve had PF for 3 months now and it’s having such an impact on my mental health I’m prepared to try anything 😢

CreateHope · 25/01/2024 23:42

@WetBandits do you mean never go barefoot while you have it or never go barefoot again? 😬

OwlWeiwei · 25/01/2024 23:49

Keep doing the exercises! They make a difference, and as PP said, never go barefoot. Even around the house, well padded supportive footwear helps - I wear sheepskin slippers with thick socks in winter and flipflops with massage soles in summer, which work brilliantly.

I've had shockwave didn't solve it, it's 85 pounds a go to, but I guess we are all different.

Definitely not while you have it, and I’ve never broken the habit since as I’m petrified of ever having it again 🤯

CreateHope · 26/01/2024 06:16

God I love being barefoot - guess I’ll have to ditch that habit then 😢

Nanalisa60 · 26/01/2024 06:22

its actually called shockwave treatment I had it once a week for three weeks plus still doing my exercises, it then took about a month to complete go after the last treatment. I had had planter for about 18 months it was ruining my life .
But I still wear lifts in my shoes and do my exercises and stretching , will never wear flat shoes or sandals again without any arch support.

i think it cost me about £280 not cheap but after 18 months i was desperate by that time I would have done anything to get my life back.

OwlWeiwei · 26/01/2024 14:36

I did notice that losing a stone in weight jelped too, so if any sufferers are overweight, it genuinely can take pressure off the plantar nerve to get back to a healthy weight. I was still a few pounds over the top BMI, so still officially overweight but nearly as much as before and the inflammation went down.
