Do you buy yourself different food brands from the rest of your family?

I’m just doing my food shop and I’ve added utterly butterly for my husband and kids.. then added some nice Lurpak for myself. I absolutely hate spreads like utterly butterly.. but DH always buys it.. and then also leave toast crumbs in it and can’t seem to break the habit long term, he tries.. then fails so I had to get it my foot down and ask him not to use my butter if he’s going to put crumbs in it 😂 I feel like I’m gate-keeping the nice butter but to be honest, DH doesn’t actually care for the difference anyway!

Anyone else buy weird separate items?😂

I used to do the butter thing when the kids were smaller. I'd drove me insane so the small butter was mums.

Now they are all early 20s and semi home semi at uni i buy a good chocolate spread for me and waitrose essential for general consumption. Reasoning is it's rare I have chocolate spread but when I do I want it to taste good. Were as they will go through a glass in a few days so I'm not spending £4-5 on it

Yes! Teen DS can't tell the difference between Aldi brand orange juice or the nicer versions (and has smooth whereas we prefer the one with bits) so he gets the cheap stuff and we get the fancier stuff.

AIstolemylunch · 25/01/2024 15:05

I buy Haagen Daaz for me and supermarket icecream for the kids 😝

Meadowfinch · 25/01/2024 15:08

No. DS and I eat the same food. Except I'm the only one to drink coffee and he's the one who eats cereal bars. Otherwise we eat the same. Anything else is too much like hard work.

Other way around in this house I'm afraid. DC1 is at uni so only here part of the time, but they have eating issues and are very particular; DC2 is underweight and has expensive taste, they would live on Maccies if I didn't buy the branded stuff they like. DH and I tend to live on soup, homemade curry and fresh fruit. We're not martyrs, we just have simpler tastes, but I do sometimes wince at the cost of filling the fridge for two adult children, especially as they each hate everything the other likes!

Burford Browns for us, normal free range organic for the toddler!

Mumaway · 25/01/2024 15:14

This is totally reasonable. The itsu prawn crackers are only for me.

WildCherryBlossom · 25/01/2024 16:17

Sometimes I treat myself to something I think only I will like (eg most recently black olive tapenade) only to discover that everyone loves it and they devour it! 😠

MonsteraMama · 25/01/2024 16:19

Clipper or Yorkshire tea for me and DD, my husband is a Godless heathen and drinks Tetley.

minipie · 25/01/2024 16:21

I was going to say no but then realised I have a few rather niche snack foods that I buy as a treat for myself - blue corn tortilla chips and Bath Olivers for example. The DC do sometimes snaffle a few if they catch on.

I also buy some things that are specifically for my lunch as I’m the only one here for lunch in the week. But those are healthy so
nobody wants them…

skgnome · 25/01/2024 16:24

Sort of, but it’s mostly things I like and no one else eats

Glittering1 · 25/01/2024 16:25

Original Coke and Smiths Bacon Fries for me. Teenagers know not to touch them. I buy other drinks and crisps for them that I don't eat.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 25/01/2024 16:25

I buy things that only I eat like Quorn and Linda McCartney. I don't buy myself any upgraded versions of what everyone else eats.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/01/2024 16:26

No. Nobody is very particular about brands in my house! Actually, I do have both spreadable and non-spreadable butter though. I prefer the non-spreadable, so will use that if it's not too hard / if the bread isn't too soft. Everyone else just uses the spreadable unless the butter dish is already out on the table. They aren't fussed.

I find this thread embarrassing.
I wouldn't dream of this.
And if someone pops round they are welcome to the "good stuff" too.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 25/01/2024 16:28

Only yogurt: I like the posh stuff but at 3 quid for a tiny jar, it's a waste on the DC who prefer the 99p ones.

Everything else is free for all. I'd be lucky if I ever get a look in with raspberries / blackberries / strawberries 🙄

AnnaKing81 · 25/01/2024 16:30

I get myself nice chocolate, crisps and wine, then hide it just for me!! No guilt. I work hard enough!
