"You look tired"....

How many of you would say that to a complete stranger?

The security guard outside M&S said this to me and asked why I replied that I am always tired and have Narcalopsy. I am also on various medications that make me drowsy.

Ok not the worst thing to say to someone. I am often asked if I am alright as well . Every. Day.. my eyes always look heavy However I don't think I would go up to a complete stranger who looked tired and say so.

At work they are used to me and know when I am about to close my eyes and call "wake up"! This is the main reason why I am not considering changing jobs as they are used to me! That and my regular trotting to the loo (again medication).
Anyone else had similar.

No, not something I’d say to a stranger. Unless maybe they were scissors in hand about to start trimming my hair and their eyelids started closing.

@VoleChomper
Wow that conjures up quite an image! Luckily I never fancied cutting hair for a living!!!!

Of course I cannot drive even if I could afford to. Imagine me behind a wheel!

I am in Westfield, just had a wee, then managed to spot a chair to settle down on and damn well had to go back to the loo!

Was the security guard male and you female by any chance?

Sounds a bit like a "cheer up, love, it might never happen" type comment.

LenaLamont · 25/01/2024 14:27

I think I'd hear it in a "are you ok, do you need assistance" sort of way. If I saw someone who looked so tired as to provoke comment, I'd think they might need some help.

Deathraystare · 25/01/2024 14:36

@viridiano

Oh yes a male. I think that is what made me write this! It narked me. When you get it everyday.......

Some bloke told me to"wake up" ad well as I trudged by. I was not in his way or anything.

On my worse days I think of the character Wallace from Wallace and Grommit the wrong trousers where he wears robotic trousers which keep moving even when he is sleeping, though they move better than my arthritic knees!

That's how I read it too.

When I was pregnant with dd1, after I'd fainted twice and vomited once in Sainsbury's, the security guard used to stop me on the way in, give me a chair and go and do my shopping. It was very sweet of him. He even used to fetch me a drink while he did it. He'd call me over when I needed to pay.

@MargaretThursday
@LenaLamont

Ii think I was trying to emphasise is that this is everyday!!!!

I can't stand men who comment on women's appearance/ facial expression in this way. I'd be tempted to come back with some kind of insult like 'you're no prince charming yourself, pal' (or something better that I can never think of on the spot).

You certainly don't need to explain your medical condition to this loser.

Those saying he said it out of concern - are you serious? OP hasn't said that she was struggling in any way, just that she often looks tired. I'm assuming you weren't on the verge of collapse or anything OP - obviously that's different if you might have seemed unwell.

But from what you've said, sounds much more like male entitlement and probably that he was just bored. I bet he wouldn't have said it to a man.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/01/2024 14:58

I wouldn’t say it to anyone but close family. I’ve been told I look tired when I wasn’t, so it felt like ‘you look pretty awful’. Very deflating.

Mammma91 · 25/01/2024 15:00

Not something I’d say to a stranger no, but I did say it to my sister today! Bless her she was knackered. How do you know if a stranger ‘looks tired’ , I think it’s rude to point it out!

LoobyDop · 25/01/2024 15:03

^^ this. If you don’t know someone well enough to say “I’m worried about you, how can I help?” you shouldn’t comment that they look tired.

Ursulla · 25/01/2024 15:07

He was probably trying to assess if you were likely to need assistance and/or have taken drugs/booze.

mondaytosunday · 25/01/2024 15:25

I was walking up a short flight of stairs in a parking garage and the maintenance guy in the doorway said 'next time park on level two it will be easier as no stairs'. I looked at him and said ' just need level 4' (which was the next level) and he went on about the lifts don't work etc and i starting thinking do I look disabled? Another time I was walking up some stairs and a guy told me where the lifts were. I guess I must come across as totally unfit and on the verge of collapsing!
And I always got that 'cheer up' thing when I was under 30.

MassiveIrritant · 25/01/2024 15:35

I used to get this all the time at work, "oo do you not sleep, you look really tired"

well, yeah, I used to get up at 4am to come here and slog my guts for you lot🙄

Seriously79 · 25/01/2024 15:54

Well apparently, around here when you say 'you look tired' you're actually telling someone you look dog rough!

I learnt that the hard way!

No, I would never say to a complete stranger that they looked tired, but neither would I divulge my private medical information either.
