Is there a word for this?

People who are unable to recognise quality.

People who might look at a pair of cheap plastic shoes and think they are exactly the same as a pair of leather shoes with hard wearing soles.

or who buys Shein dress and think it is exactly the same as one from say, Reiss. They won’t look at the lining or the slightly frayed edges or that’s it’s likely to go up in flames, they just think it’s all the same.

I have a friend like this and while I love her, it’s becoming hard when we are picking a restaurant as she will consistently find somewhere that’s 1 star cleanliness and won’t listen to anyone (not just me) who says that’s not ideal. It’s like she’s a homing pigeon to these places. If we suggest somewhere else that’s also cheap but is clean, she’s say it’s the same. This then made look at everything else, I wonder if she doesn’t look very closely at things.

undiscerning, is that the word? I don’t think it is.

I'm reading here wondering if there is a word for the opposite? My sister has to have the absolute best of everything. You could decide to go for a coffee but we have to seek out this 'little place she knows' where they import particular beans etc. I was visiting a few years ago and we had to travel half way across London because some place does an amazing egg bendict or something. She spends hours scouring through menus and restaurant reviews and will harp on about the chef here trained under blah blah. She literally researches her meals. It's exhausting!!

Pretentious

I do check the menu to pre plan my dinner and then the food rating. Even really expensive places get a 1 sometimes, it’s always good to check.

I think the word might be "sensible" or " pragmatic" or "realistic" or something along those lines

Isn't it the opposite? The friend doesn't sound like she's pragmatically judging that cheap shoes will be good enough and expensive ones not worth the money on her budget. She sounds like someone liable to fritter money blindly on crap that constantly breaks and needs replacing, whether or not she can afford better. I think undiscerning is exactly the word. She's not thinking about value for money, that's how I read it.

I'm going for undiscerning, too. Or indiscriminate?

I grew up in a family with very tight budgets. After leaving home, my horizons expanded; I was frequently stunned by variations in quality and the unexpected range of alternatives to familiar things. I consciously set about learning how good quality looks, feels, tastes, sounds and smells. Then, having 'got my eye in', I established my parameters of good value: I can't have the best of everything but can recognise it, and am pretty good at identifying the best quality for the price.

Your friend equates value with low price. Sometimes the cheapest is the best value but by no means always. She might be afraid of 'training' her judgement, in case she starts spending a fortune? I mean, she wouldn't, but I can see how it might worry somebody who invariably picks the cheapest.

I'd probably put my foot down over the shitty restaurants - though I've eaten in some ghastly places and am still not dead 😁

My little sister is the same. It could be FOMO, or it could be that she is generally anxious and very driven to be busy every single minute and in control of EVERYTHING. She is exhausting.

She just sounds tight as a gnat's chuff to me tbh.

I think the word(s) you're looking for are 'pain in the arse'

sorry I can't help with 'the word' but I'd lose patience with her.

ating out, I'd get the others to agree to where you're eating then tell her you're going to xyz if she wants to come.

i was brought up to go with the best value for money. I'll work out the best value pack size etc

Restaurants I'm very fussy about cleanliness, but more my perception than looking up ratings. I'm usually spot on if I see a rating though.

icallitasplodge · 25/01/2024 19:43

I don’t think she’s tight. I think she can’t tell the difference. And that’s the word I’m missing! 🤣

I could understand her not noticing if a place looked a bit mucky, or being unaware of the rating (because I don't look up hygiene ratings before eating somewhere).

But how can she not just ie when you've SHOWED her evidence that the place is a health risk? I don't understand how she doubles down then?

Adrifting · 26/01/2024 07:47

Unworldly.

icallitasplodge · 26/01/2024 08:50

She will say things like, I’ve heard good stuff about it, my good friend went there, it’s on Instagram, those ratings don’t mean anything, everywhere is pretty much the same (you’ve seen a couple of those types of responses here) they do big portions (not even true half the time), they do discounts etc etc. if she finds out after she will still go back.

They are often those kind of cash only, newly opened, everything is covered in artificial flowers kind of places that look like a money laundering front.

Undiscriminating maybe?

@OneDivineHammer hit it. Undiscriminating. It really isn't so very long ago that the ability to discriminate was highly regarded.
