Dd has lots of spots all over her back, shoulders, and tops of legs etc.
Her face was v bad but is much clearer bar for head and some around chin.
We had antibiotics and she took them v well but after a few months tailed off..... It feels like years... What should we ask for /try next.
. I'm nervous about the pill. Is there anything else.

My DD had terrible acne so we paid to see a private dermatologist. He prescribed the Yasmin contraceptive pill as the pill our GP had prescribed wasn't skin friendly ( annoying as the only reason for taking the pill was to
Improve her skin)

He also prescribed Lymecycline antibiotics which she took for 6 months and treclin gel.

Her skin cleared up really quickly and even the scarring faded.

The wait time for dermatology referrals in our area ( Essex) was almost two years. DD was referred in August 2022 and was finally called in August 2023 and offered a Jan 2024 appointment!

Our DD was desperate so we had paid to go private and she was seen in Nov 2022 as there was a three month wait even going private.

@Sunshineandrainbows23 interestingly that article says low fat or skimmed milk not full fat is a culprit

Yes, no idea why! As a mere amateur, I would have thought it the other way round as saturated fat is known to cause inflammation, and cheese is particularly high in oestrogen as it's so concentrated ... I

I think there's a bit of a disconnect between small scale research studies and what people are experiencing in real life with this one. It might be worth giving it a go for a while to see if it helps ... Sometimes research has to catch up with real life results if that makes sense ...

Anecdotally, I've found diet changes have really helped with a couple of health issues I've had, when the medics couldn't help, so I do tend to be a bit enthusiastic about it. :)

Whatever path you choose, really good luck! :)

@Sunshineandrainbows23

Medicine definitely needs to link up with diet more

Acnecide cream (can get over counter) light amount on problem areas (totally dries the area out)

No makeup - light makeup when worn must be non-comedogenic. Absolutely nothing containing oil on the skin.

Shower and cleanse every night before bed so skin is steamed/ultra clean overnight

Cetaphil cleansers and moisturisers only, or cerave - do not bother with all the other brands and anti-spots promises

Always stay hydrated and moderate oils, sugar etc

Don't touch face / pick etc (difficult one esp when suffering!)

I was just thinking earlier I'd like to pass my skin advice on! I had acne from later teen years, about 18/19yo, to early thirties. Had roaccutane in 20s which is brutal but necessary for chronic cases. But the acne does usually come back after a few years. And it took me a few years and lots of meds (antibiotics, contraceptives, also topicals etc, all of which I regret) to conclude that the above worked.

Word for word the same as my experience. Acnecide is a real blessing. And dermatologists recommend benzoyl peroxide (active ingredient in acnecide) to treat acne so it's a perfectly safe solution.
I would also suggest using gel or serum moisturisers only as lotions are often bad for acne.

Thethingswedoforlove · 25/01/2024 20:23

She is likely to be referred to a dermatologist op. They seem to have a pathway of treatment but ultimately leading to roaccutwne which is a strong drug which works for nearly everyone. Long nhs waiting lists for seeing the dermatologists at the moment tho.

PureAmazonian · 25/01/2024 20:23

Also went vegan and ate a very very clean diet. That helped A LOT.

CJCreggsGoldfish · 25/01/2024 20:26

Yasmin works a treat for me. It’s definitely hormones causing mine as I didn’t have any spots whilst pregnant or breast feeding.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/01/2024 21:33

@RoseandVioletCreams from memory it was about £300.

We saw him just the once and he gave us a private prescription for the Lymecycline but he also wrote to our GP and asked him to set up a repeat prescription for 6 months.

He also asked the GP to switch the contraceptive pill to Yasmin. We didn't need a follow up - he said to make an appointment if things don't improve within 6 months but she's all clear now.

It was worth every penny.

RoseandVioletCreams · 25/01/2024 22:07

@AngelsWithSilverWings. Thank you.

I going to try docs first but will consider this next. I'm worried damage has already been done.

I do wonder though whether I can ask doc for allergy check as well because she suddenly had constipating issues as well ( about 2 years after spots?

RoseandVioletCreams · 25/01/2024 22:08

@PureAmazonian

She doesn't use any moisturer at all at the moment

GaladrielHiggins · 26/01/2024 18:11

If the spots are on her back/legs does she use hair conditioner regularly? If conditioning is the last thing she does then this can cause blocked pores on her back, she should use an anti spot wash on her body after the conditioner has been rinsed out.

Popfan · 26/01/2024 18:16

I took dianette as a teenager / young adult, it was extremely effective and cleared up my skin totally. Yasmin didn't work as well.

Sofabum · 26/01/2024 18:20

Dianette worked for me within a week it was remarkable. I'd try it because this is more than spots it'll be her whole confidence and comfort.

RoseandVioletCreams · 27/01/2024 08:37

@Sofabum how long woud she stay on that for.. Life or a few months?

OP posts:
BurbageBrook · 27/01/2024 08:39

The contraceptive pill has far fewer side effects than taking antibiotics long term. I think it would definitely be best to try that next.
