Anybody from HMRC on here?

I am a non taxpayer and have just applied to have some interest on savings returned to me. If I am successful they will send me a cheque!!!!!

My OH has a tax rebate due to him, having filled in his tax return, but that can be paid directly into his bank account.

I am at a loss as to understand why my interest can't be paid into my bank account.

If there is a good reason I would be very curious to know what it is.

Should I post this in a different section perhaps?

What sort of savings are you referring to?

My cash savings are kept in my personal bank account, and as they accrue interest monthly the interest is paid into that same account. I have never heard of someone having to apply (to HMRC?) to have interest on savings returned to them. You do have to pay income tax on interest that exceeds a certain threshold.

But maybe someone with better knowledge can help you

Why are you asking for someone from HMRC?

Who is the refund coming from - the bank?

Or do you mean you have had tax deducted on interest and HMRC will refund it? If so, then they can only pay into your bank account if you have put your bank details on your tax return, or entered the details in your Government Gateway account, otherwise it's a cheque

Advice400 · 24/01/2024 16:09

Are you sure tax was taken from your savings interest? It's a pretty rare occurance now. They stopped taking tax at source on bank interest many years ago.

I don't think anyone will be able to answer because there isn't enough info.
What is the account the savings are in? What are the terms for that account?
It is unusual for account holders to have to apply to receive the interest on their savings accounts.
Please check you aren't being scammed in any way.

I don’t know, but it’s probably because you’re not set up on the SA system with your bank details in there.
the good news is that most online banking apps have the facility to upload a pic of your cheque with your phone so you don’t have to actually go to a bank and it’s not a big deal

CarlaH · 24/01/2024 16:12

Yes indeed I have had tax deducted from an interest payment. This is an investment I have had for many years and I have successfully received the interest back from HMRC in the past but they always send a cheque.

It's not a bank or building society but it is an interest payment or at least that is what it says on the tax voucher.

However my query is simply why I cannot get this paid directly into my bank. Given that not long ago there was a suggestion that we would be getting rid of cheques altogether.

And it’s true your OP must be worded wrong - HMRC won’t give you back the interest. They may give you back tax on the interest but unless you’re some sort of millionaire mogul that’s likely to be pretty small!

When my partner's submitted his online tax return they didn't appear to have his bank details and asked for them. So they could do the same for me if they had a will to do so.

Unless, of course, there is a reason why they can't and I was just curious if anybody who works for HMRC might be able to enlighten me.

I did fill in the form using the Government Gateway (as indeed did my partner).

Yes you are right I meant the tax deducted from the interest payment. Sorry.

If you reclaim it through completing a paper repayment claim form with all of your income on and then you can add bank details to the form.

If you complete a online or paper Tax Return the same applies - you can add bank details.

Or if you get HMRC to do it and send you a , I think, P800 then their calculation documentation gives you choices such as requesting it direct to your bank in your online account but if you don't then they will send you a cheque.

Chewbecca · 24/01/2024 16:19

Ah, that makes much more sense now.
I imagine they will simply be sending a cheque because they don't have your bank details. They won't take bank details willy nilly, they'd need to do quite a lot of checks so it is likely to be much easier to stick a cheque in the post than try to validate your ID.

Thanks for the responses. Much appreciated.
