Finding it hard to drink (water)!

This is going to sound weird but I keep on not drinking, feeling very dehydrated but still can't seem to convince myself to drink anything. Anybody else get like this? Seems to be particularly when I'm stressed.

Has a bat bitten you recently? Or a frothy-looking dog?

Cappuccinfortwo · 23/01/2024 23:41

Ha, ha no! My teeth are a lot more sensitive though so I think it's partly that. But I just don't like the sensation!

Have you tried using a straw or sippy cup? Might help to bypass the sensitive teeth.

I've recently switched to fizzy water, which isn't good for the teeth but seems to make me feel more 'quenched' than normal water and is
slightly less boring. It seems to hit the spot on a first swig.

Interesting conundrum though, OP - not come across it before. I imagine you'll drink before you die of thirst so maybe just don't worry too much.

puffylovett1 · 23/01/2024 23:52

Yes, me! Right here with you. I can go all day on 2 cups of coffee and a glass of squash. Thirsty, but not motivated to drink or just don’t seem to make the time.
I need to get better at it! I used to drink 1.5L a day

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/01/2024 23:53

I don't like drinking plain water, has to have squash in it.

Try sensitive toothpaste.

notknowledgeable · 23/01/2024 23:56

maybe you have convinced yourself you need more water than you actually do? Easy to fall into that trap with all the advertising by bottled water companies trying to insist we need 2L per day or whatever rubbish.

No, on average I drink about half of a 500ml bottle but also feel dehydrated. I guess I'll just have to suck it up (boom, boom).

I always find it harder when the weathers cold, just don't feel like drinking cold water. Have you tried having hot drinks instead? Anything mostly water will stop you being dehydrated - green tea, black tea, herbal tea, hot squash, hot water with lemon, tea/coffee with just a splash of milk

junebirthdaygirl · 24/01/2024 07:35

I am so bad at drinking water that when l had to have a blood test the nurse just couldn't get it She asked ...could you be dehydrated? Then l realised l hadn't drank any water all day and ll was embarrassed and a bit frightened actually when no blood would come. It's an ongoing issue as l get so weak and then remember. Lately l have to make a huge effort to just do it although l never do it automatically. Could you hang a message in your kitchen or put an alarm on your phone. That's what l have to do.

I rarely drink a glass of water but have numerous cups of hot drinks a day instead- rooibos tea, peppermint tea, and my current favourite, Pukka winter warmer 😋

RedPanda2022 · 24/01/2024 07:45

I know everyone claims to drink water, but many people don’t drink much plain water. Try squash or just find anything else that is fluid you do enjoy for the time being!

GuffyTheDustBuster · 24/01/2024 07:46

I've taken to warm water with a chunk of lemon. Can drink big mugs of that easily unlike chugging cold water

pumpkinpiee · 24/01/2024 07:47

Yes me too, I forget 😂

ChocoChocoLatte · 24/01/2024 08:12

I use a water bottle and set myself small targets. For example, if I've to drive somewhere, I'll fill the bottle and tell myself it has to be drunk by the end of the journey etc.

Sounds silly but works for me

Cappuccinfortwo · 24/01/2024 14:11

Thanks for the tips. I'm trying some out and have already done better today!

Just try different drinks:
Water
Hot water
Squash
Hot squash
Tea
Coffee
Fruit teas
Fruit juices
Fizzy water
Squash with fizzy water
Hot chocolate

Go down the cold drinks and hot drinks aisles at the supermarket. There's loads.

My employer would supply large jugs of plain water with pieces of citrus fruit, or apple, mint, cucumber in room temperature, which got me into the habit of consciously drinking more water.

Nowadays I drink copious amounts of herb (not fruit) teas as well as plain tap room temperature water and I always have a bottle of water in my bag when out and about, and always feel better - often less tired - for that. 🌹

I realised recently that it's cold water that I don't like. I drink it warm now and manage to have much more and with much more enthusiasm

EggTheFirst · 25/01/2024 09:29

Fizzy vitamins are my trick. I have one vitamin C, one oral hydration and one for joint health.

Yes this too! I run a glass of water and leave on the side to warm up. DH thinks I’m mad 🤣
