Wirral - is it friendly?

Hello, considering a move back up to the Wirral after 15 years in London. All friends etc are based in the south, & I could not wait to leave the Wirral as a student… but having a child has made me reevaluate what’s important. DS is 1, no friends still on the Wirral. Is it friendly? Or would I be super lonely?! Also - are there any children’s centres that run classes left??

I’d say it’s one of the friendliest places you could move to, could you spend more time up there first and see how it feels?

carly2803 · 23/01/2024 21:34

which bit?

champagnetears · 24/01/2024 19:00

Heswall/West Kirby/Meols. My worry is most people grew up there - is it easy to break into friendship groups?

My friend just moved to bebbington- she loves it. Happiest she’s ever been

KindleGirlie · 24/01/2024 19:22

Heswall is my favourite place in the UK. I wasn’t there long (student) and a bit of an outsider but I was welcomed with open arms! Many a pub visit, invited over to dinner and sat in a car eating chips parked watching the estuary.

I am the most introverted person I know.

If I could move there again I would.

champagnetears · 24/01/2024 19:27

May I ask where she’s moved from?

Well they don’t call it the insular peninsular for nothing! You’ll be fine if you’re actually from there and fit the mould. Less so if you don’t.

Gymmum82 · 24/01/2024 19:34

Yea it’s friendly. Don’t know about children’s centres but there are plenty of baby groups and classes. Loads of mums in and around heswall. You’ll not struggle to make friends

Nineteendays · 25/01/2024 09:09

Hi op she moved from Manchester. So not mega far

CanaryCanary · 25/01/2024 09:25

I always found it very friendly, much more so than down south. The kind of place you get chatting to people at the bus stop.

People do tend to stay there so you’re right there’s a lot of established friendship groups, it could be hard to feel really part of those.

However the best possible time to move is with a young child imo - you’ll meet people at playgroups, then nurseries, then school and gradually have more of an established group. Having kids the same age breaks down lots of boundaries!

Mabelface · 25/01/2024 09:26

Wirral people are friendly! We tend to talk to anyone. I've moved away, but visit regularly to see family.

RubyRed55 · 25/01/2024 09:31

Generally Northerners are more chatty friendly. I'm a Northerner, and would honestly chat to anyone. My DH thinks I'm weird 😂

Crabwoman · 25/01/2024 09:40

I am an outsider. I moved to the Wirral 13 years ago and wouldn't live anywhere else.

I'd say that 40% of my neighbours are from outside the North West, so I'd say more and more people are moving here.

champagnetears · 25/01/2024 13:41

Thank you so much everyone! It’s a HUGE change and leaving a lot behind, but I think it’s the right thing to do for us as a family… now to convince DH!

Wirralian here! Although you and your friends moved away, you’ll find that there are still lots of people here that you grew up with. I’m very friendly now with women who weren’t particularly part of my social group in school, but I’ve connected over Facebook years later. Have a bit of a stalk and see who you know that’s still up here, and drop them a message. Good luck!

Exactly who calls it the insular peninsula..? Not heard that before?

I'm not local, lived in Wirral for around forty years. I've still got my own accent and haven't had any stick from anyone... DH is also a "foreigner" and hasn't had any grief about it.

(I'm autistic and not by any means an extrovert and even I chat to people at the bus stop. Why wouldn't you?)

Mumaway · 25/01/2024 14:09

Love it, and would live in Heswall.

MILTOBE · 25/01/2024 14:19

So nice to see the love for the Wirral!

champagnetears · 25/01/2024 14:31

Isn’t it just?!

I was DESPERATE to move away as a teen but now completely appreciate why my parents settled there!

I moved away from Wirral 15 years ago and I am planning to move back. Whenever I visit I just feel....home!

It's twinned with Lorient, France and Royston Vasey
