WWYD with no internet for a week, if you lived alone?

Creeperofhabit · 23/01/2024 17:25

My friend's internet has been cut off because the provider have made a mistake (she told them she didn't want some extras on her sky tv any longer, but they've cut the whole lot off instead).

She can't work (health issues), lives by herself and doesn't see much of anyone. She relies on the internet to speak to her friends, use forums, watch her favourite TV, do hobbies, she also buys and sells things, now she can't do any of it for a week until they can put it back on.

She does have hobbies outside of the home, and a friend who lives an hour away who drops in sometimes, but due to the weather her friend can't visit and her hobbies (photography, magnet fishing, walking, fossils) are all not very accessible for now. She does live in a very picturesque part of the country though.

I've made a few suggestions. She's said she'll sort some things in her house but, she's quite organised and good at DIY anyway so doesn't have much to do to pass the time.

WWYD in her position? She says she's 'climbing the walls' after one day! I am two hours from her and can't visit because I've got a house move this weekend and will be working on the other days Sad

I know It's a 'first world problem' but I feel sorry for her as she's a close friend and has had lots of bad luck in life (is NC with family, has a lot of illnesses, a lot of bad luck generally recently so I'd like to help her pass the time but my mind's gone blank!

She doesn't have any data on her phone?

I would read, cook, watch TV (I have an aerial) do a bit of origami and make some pom-poms, give myself a pedicure. I'm always surprised at people who get bored so easily.

BoobyDazzler · 23/01/2024 17:43

Buy an eSIM.

OhmygodDont · 23/01/2024 17:43

I’d be gaming on my offline games. Can lose major hours there tbh.

Whaleandsnail6 · 23/01/2024 17:43

Im a bit ashamed to say that I would find this really tough and I live with my family and also work full time!

I like relaxing by watching TV (which we also need internet for) and even my indoor hobby of cross stitch I do Infront of the TV. I love podcasts as well but would need the internet to download new ones.

I'd probably get through the unread books on my kindle and go on lots of walks and go swimming, declutter the house and decorate (I'd miss the radio as I listen to that on alexa!)but this thread has made me realise I am probably too reliant on the internet

OhmygodDont · 23/01/2024 17:45

Though why is it taking a week to fix? Surely the provider just turns her back on as she never wanted to end her broadband or phone line anyway? It’s not hard or long job.

unless she’s now changing providers completely.

jay55 · 23/01/2024 17:46

I'd be playing a long game of civ and reading.
And climbing the walls a bit.

I'd have to go in to the office if I couldn't wfh though which would take up much of the day and I'd probably go to the cinema on the way home.

Mindymomo · 23/01/2024 17:46

We recently had no internet for 7 days. It was ok, we had quite a few things on the tv planner that we watched. We had long baths in the evening, caught up with the ironing and cleaned out the kitchen cupboards. I also went shopping twice as I couldn’t get an online one, which was nice and I took a bit longer. DH and I read a lot anyway, so probably read a little more.

frozendaisy · 23/01/2024 17:47

Send her a jigsaw puzzle
Get the radio times and find something she likes to listen to
Spend a fair amount of time mastering a new type of cuisine, Caribbean, Thai etc you can get any number of books out of the library or try recipes in books she already has.

It's only a week.

Self care, baths/showers lotions and potions.

Master the Rubik's cube

Sketch her fossil collection or draw imaginary animals the fossils might have come from

Hand make the birthday cards she will need for the year

Really tedious but ticks it off, clean oven, fridge/freezer, tiles and grouting, windows.

Start planting a window sill herb garden

Any sewing repairs

Drink herbal teas watch gentle TV

StillCreatingAName · 23/01/2024 17:47

Personally- in her situation- I’d be querying why it will take a week to restore her internet connection. It’s literally still coming into her house, unless they’ve removed all equipment? It really takes hours (minutes) to reconnect, not days.
TV freeview is always still available too, you just lose on demand services if no broadband or similar.

GaroTheMushroom · 23/01/2024 17:47

Creeperofhabit · 23/01/2024 17:36

She can't get it on her 'phone either because It's the same provider-I did suggest that, or buying a dongle!

Buy a sim it’s like £1?

BeaLola · 23/01/2024 17:48

Read , read , read - probably go to bee early to do so or snuggled up under blanket on sofa

Bake and batch cook meals

Binge on a box set like Line Of Duty or Bosch

Face mask , hair mask - watch a chick lit type film

Get someone to deliver (friend can place order) lots of lovely food and drink and veg

Go for a walk via pub

mooncloud1 · 23/01/2024 17:53

This happened to me 5 or so years back but it was 3 weeks and no warning, router broke and they took forever to post a new one.
Fortunately it was summer and I have a dog, so lots of walk and exercise.
Got the dvd player out and rewatched box sets.
Read a lot.
I didn't wfh then most of the week I was at work. I can appreciate being at home all the time makes it harder.
We rely on the internet so much.

OpalOrchid · 23/01/2024 17:55

i'd buy some data for my phone if I didn't already have loads in my package.

fulgrate · 23/01/2024 17:56

I wouldn't manage a week without it now. I mean I would but I would be quite unhappy so would choose not to.

CormorantStrikesBack · 23/01/2024 17:58

Try cross stitch? Dd has recently got into it and it looks engrossing.

play solitaire on my iPad….I don’t need internet for that.

read books, get to the library if I didn’t have a stash.

Onevelvetmorning · 23/01/2024 17:59

Read, read, read. Go to the library.
I have a bookcase full of DVDs of movies and tv box sets to watch. She could get some at the library if she doesn't have any.
Have two old iPod Nanos full of audiobooks, so would listen and get a major house clean done and workouts. Audiobooks also available at the library.
Long walks with DDogs. Borrow a dog, if she doesn't have one?🐶
Bake as I never have time usually.

Winnipeggy · 23/01/2024 18:01

Does she have mobile data on her phone? She can tether that to her tv/laptop etc

AncientSkaterGirl · 23/01/2024 18:01

PamelaParis · 23/01/2024 17:30

I would get extra data for my phone until the WiFi was back on.

I too would do this amd use phone as hotspot to connect TV, laptop etc

BobnLen · 23/01/2024 18:14

Watch terrestrial TV, people that have Sky generally have a TV licence, she can't have watched everything on iPlayer and ITVx.
Buy a sim and data, as long as you don't constantly stream HD TV it doesn't use that much data, to hook up for general internet.

Tinkerbyebye · 23/01/2024 18:18

Read, hand embroidery,

can she buy extra data and see if sky will cover it?

EBearhug · 23/01/2024 18:19

Reading, painting, knitting, sewing. Cooking. If the weather's dry, gardening. Go for a swim or a walk or the museum. If I'm desperate, housework.

I have broadband and mobile phone from different providers so I'm not reliant on a single network.

thedancingparrot · 23/01/2024 18:20

Put data on phone to listen to podcasts whilst giving the house an epic spread clean, move furniture around, declutter etc & maybe DIY.

read boots, cook different food etc

BobnLen · 23/01/2024 18:22

Has she got a tv aerial

Serendipity888 · 23/01/2024 18:23

Read, Cross stitch and other crafts

BrieAndChilli · 23/01/2024 18:23

When our sky internet was down the other week they gave us (and everyone else affected) free data on our mobile phones. They should be able to turn her mobile phone back on straight away and give her some data to use as a hotspot.
