QTS or Education Studies and PGCE -opinions needed please

I appreciate all teachers are currently in the classroom.

But on the off chance

My DD has her Uni offers in.

She has been offered Primary Teaching with QTS ( x2)
Or

Education Studies. ( x3) ( which she could follow with a PGCE)

I think she’d be daft to turn down courses with QTS status.

All Unis are about equal. Grades needed pretty similar.

Any comments please?

I'm not a teacher but I'd have thought if she wanted to teach in primary it would make sense to do the course that would give her QTS in three years. That would save her a year's worth of fees and living expenses.

I’m a retired teacher and I would go down the Primate teaching with QTS status. She will be in the classroom more quickly gaining hands on experience for her future career.
In my experience PGCE route benefits those with degrees in specific subjects, but is quite short on hands on experience. Three short university terms.

Bumping in the case some teachers are home from work and spot this.

Teacher here. What would she teach with Education Studies?
I'd go for a degree with QTS

Shinyandnew1 · 23/01/2024 19:22

As a teacher, I’d go for a subject specific degree and then a PGCE.

Then if she decides to leave, at least she would then have a better starting point. Sorry to be brutal, but many many trainee teachers do.

Snowdropsareontheirway · 23/01/2024 19:25

She may struggle to get onto a PGCE with that degree.

Why does she not want to do primary teaching B Ed?

Hatty65 · 23/01/2024 19:45

As a teacher, I'd recommend a specific degree followed by a PGCE. This gives her more options if she decides (as many do, very quickly) that teaching is not for her.

I don't even know what 'Education Studies' is, to be honest. And Primary Teaching leaves you stuck with that.

These are the only choices.

Education Studies or Primary and QTS.
She doesn't want to do a single subject degree and she cant now. All interviews and applications are in.

Ultimately I think she will work with special Ed in some respect

Primate teaching? I know things are bad but these are primary school kids, surely 😂

sorry, couldn’t resist x

🤣🤣🤣 Well that teaches the importance of checking your work!

I’d go down the QTS route as I’m not even sure what an education studies degree would cover. Would be better to get the experience from a QTS degree.

I’m a deputy head and most in my school have done the degree and then PGCE route but I’m in secondary so people have tended to do their subject specialism degree first.
