What happens after gallbladder removal, down the line?

I had my gallbladder out last year due to gallstones. I was told I could go home and eat as normal and so far so good. Except now I am hearing from various sources here and elsewhere that gallstones can still form even after gallbladder removal but that they can end up in the liver or pancreas or in the bile duct where they can still cause infection and damage to organs which aren't as disposable as your gallbladder.

Obviously I don't want that to happen! How do I prevent new stones from forming after gallbladder removal?

Is this definitely true? Yikes! Am having my gallbladder out next week and this has not been mentioned!

Hadalifeonce · 22/01/2024 20:46

I had my gallbladder out But 15 years ago, I haven't really changed anything, and have had no problems.

In my experience - 12 years on - absolutely nothing happens, apart from living life completely normally and eating/drinking whatever you like.

My DH had his out about 6 years ago. He just carries on and nothing has happened.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/01/2024 20:50

Even if this is true, I doubt you can do anything to prevent it. Just live your life and don't worry about something that hasn't even happened. I had my gallbladder out seven years ago and I'm perfectly fine.

mynameiscalypso · 22/01/2024 20:52

I think it's pretty rare for that to happen. There's always going to be horror stories online but it's really not that likely - thousands and thousands of people have their gallbladders out every year and it's likely a very tiny % that ever have any trouble. Mine came out nearly 10 years ago. No issues at all. Eat whatever I want.

punchdrunkdove · 22/01/2024 20:52

@vinoandbrie I don't think it is true for everyone but it can happen to some people I don't know why!

I suppose its just a good incentive to eat healthy and look after my self!

Which you should do anyway. Don't go looking for problems where none exist.

I do look after myself, I wasn't even ill with a bad gallbladder before my surgery, I just got an bad infection in it and needed surgery as an emergency. I don't drink, I am veggie, cook everything from scratch, exercise daily, do yoga and my gallbladder still nearly killed me, no wonder I am a bit concerned about the next thing!

This although really greasy fatty food is more of an issue to digest. But apart from that and that might just be me

Hadalifeonce · 22/01/2024 21:10

I don't tend to have really greasy food, but use butter and cheese regularly. Essentially I really didn't change anything.

Itsmeamandaberry · 22/01/2024 21:35

I had mine out ten years ago since then I have had near constant acid reflux and can not eat greasy food such as KFC or anywhere with dirty oil or I need the bathroom very quickly.

breadinthemicrowaveornothing · 22/01/2024 21:39

I had mine out a few years ago age 22.

NOT A THING is different in feeling or anything else. It just feels normal. One thing I will mention that I think (from Google) is related to no gallbladder - mucusy stools sometimes Blush but not very often

Be warned though, 3 weeks after the gallbladder removal, I had agonising pain. The exact copy of gallbladder attacks but worse... I was rushed back into hospital to be told they found some 'slush' (whatever that meant) but nothing else. It then went away completely. I was told this can be quite common?

I live a lovely, pain free existence now
