Strange animal in my house!

Growing up in an animal loving family I’ve always taken it for granted that people know their animal species. I currently have 8 house rabbits, and 2 cats.

Yesterday I had a guy out to repair a window and he saw one of my rabbits. He looked at her and asked what kind of animal it was. He genuinely didn’t know, and was amazed when I told him it was a rabbit and said he had no idea they were so big!

Talking to friends, one said a guy she worked with called 999 as he had a hedgehog In his house and didn’t know what was.

Another said she remembered her mum somehow thinking that a hedgehog and a badger were the same size...and another time her mum asked if the pet geckos had lungs 😐

This has made me wonder what other similar stories people have?

This thread is hilarious…..but I have realised that I don’t actually know what a buffalo wing is 😳

Maybe we should start a new thread as to what we all think they are… let alone why they are called that 😹

My dc1 was an early speaker. He knew the names of all the animals in his picture books, but only saw his first live horse at about 20m. He stared at it for a while, asked "What dat?" and then answered himself, "Big...BIG...dog."

From then until he was nearly four, horses and dogs were the same animal. A Yorkshire terrier once caused great excitement: "Look, Mummy, look! Hairy horse! Hairy, small horse!"

The hat is adorable!

I saw an armadillo walk across a car park in Texas once. It never occurred to me that you'd find them in the city, I thought I was seeing things.

troppibambini6 · 23/01/2024 11:40

Great thread I don't know what a buffalo wing is and had to Google a glis glis!

I was phoned by some random guy up the road to come fetch my cat once, because he'd gone into their garden not realising they had free range rabbits that had chased him under a bush where he was shaking with fear. To be fair, the rabbits were twice the size of him and I was a little scared of them as well.

@MotherOfBengals how do your cats and your rabbits get along? I assume neither is in danger from the other but what did they think when they were first introduced?! Are they friends now - do your cats snuggle up with the rabbits for bodily warmth?

Rabbits are very capable of holding thier own, but obviously do have disadvantage in being a prey animal.
I’ve kept cats and rabbits together for years. My rabbits used to be outside, and the cats would understand to keep away. When I first moved to keeping them indoors, the cat I had then kept the rabbit under the futon for a while. Would chase her back if she came out.

Overall, it’s when either rabbits or cats (particularly the bengals) are young they need more supervision until they learn to live together.

one of my cats now can be a bit of a pest and likes to chase the rabbits when she gets bored. She obviously does get stopped, but the intention is harmless and it’s mostly just a quick burst to assert herself (not continually round and round).

Same cat sat on my lap with the rabbit washing her once too. Now rabbit is more established in the household she doesn’t sit with me as much.

overall though mine just live alongside each other, rabbits cuddle rabbits, cats cuddle cats. I have seen people on FB with cats and dogs that cuddle up with rabbits

cats do have a fb page actually, features cats more than the rabbits though https://www.facebook.com/TwoBengalCats

I was just replying to @Daffodilsandbagels about how the cats and rabbits live together. Rabbits are not all cute and fluffy. Lol

My ex best friend once got a bearded dragon and she showed me it when I visited one day. "He hasn't breathed fire yet though." She said, in all seriousness. "They only do it when they're mad."

😐

They must be real!

I went into Waitrose a day or two before Burns Night last year and couldn't find any haggises, and when I asked, the butcher told me that the last few in the shop had escaped.

So they are real then , the Waitrose butcher said so lol

She’s gained a bit of weight since she’s been with me - a rescue found straying, just under a year ago.
I think she needs a bigger head, she’s outgrowing it a bit 🐰

I managed to convince my Dh that it was “one shep, two sheep.” Ie that ‘sheep’ is the plural of ‘shep’.

It was 25 years before he realised.

Edited

Rabbits can indeed hold their own. I was walking in a wood where there was an old mill pond dam, now used as a warren, and was interested to see a stoat or weasel (not easily distinguished by me) slinking up on one of the rabbit holes. Whereupon a big buck faced it, thumped his foot as a warning, and advanced very aggressively upon the predator, who did that thing cats do when they want to convince you they didn't mean it and slunk away. The buck wasn't convinced and stayed on guard duty.

Mortgage2024 · 23/01/2024 12:29

@WormHoleInSpace do you by any chance live in a village beginning with a B? Because the time I saw someone waking (what I thought were) ferrets in the village is the stuff of family lore...

A man doing some work for us said how much he liked our rabbit as he was leaving. The rabbit had been dead for over 30 years, but we think he was confused by the Guinea pig.

Maybe it was the rabbit‘s ghost he saw? 👻

I walk cats, which people find bizarre enough. I’ve not tried growing one in a window box yet, shall have to try that, thank you.
😸

I also walk my cat !

A woman I was talking to at an event told me she'd driven through a village and there were ostriches running around. She showed me a photo. They were pea hens. I told her. She'd never heard of pea hens. It took quite a lot of explaining.

Similarly, a bf and I were driving and a very obviously male pheasant ran across the road and I said "hurry up Mr Pheasant" and he said "how do you know it's a mister!" in this kind of "gotcha" tone. Well mate, it just bloody is!

Of course it's an animal. The skins are used for kilts.

My Italian DH was very put out when I corrected him that multiple sheep are not sheeps, cue lots of muttering about "your stupid language"! Grin

There are loads of nouns like that though - furniture, is another example. There's a name for them, something like non countable nouns.

But everyone knows the singular of sheep is shoop.

A stoat can be easily
Told from a weasel
For the simple fact
That its tail is black'd
And its figure is slightly the bigger.

(I'll get my coat ... 😂)

I had a work colleague that was kind of the opposite once...

Another colleague brought her newborn baby in when it was two or three weeks old.

My work colleague said "Awww...she's beautiful, has she opened her eyes yet?"

She thought human babies were like puppies and kittens and their eyes were closed for the first few weeks of their life.
