When did you start enjoying wine?

I've heard it's something that's supposed to come with age.

I've just turned 24 and can force it down if it's given to me, but I absolutely do not enjoy it.

It's silly, but I like the idea of enjoying a glass of wine!

Around 18-19. I grew up in Germany and German wine is good and not too expensive, especially when you live in a wine region or - like my PIL - get wine delivered twice a year.

What is sold here as German wine is absolutely awful unless you can afford £15-20 for a bottle.

I prefer dry. I love English white but it's really expensive so it's reserved for things like my birthday or Christmas.

Ooh yes, Nyetimber is what I like on a special occasion as an aperitif. We had that on Christmas day.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/01/2024 19:23

I find wine like a mince pie...you enjoy it as you get older

Never looked at it that way before, but you're exactly right, that's so true! 😆

I think I was about 30. My mil poured me a glass of white wine at a family bbq.

I didn’t like it in my 20s.

31 and I still think it's fucking revolting.

itispersonal · 22/01/2024 19:40

Mid 20s for Rose - white Zinfandel, a lot of years later white wine and late 30s I now love red wine!

Red wine is definitely my winter tipple but cider/ lager being my summer

Kalevala · 22/01/2024 19:42

I'm 40 and I don't like wine or beer. I'm a cider drinker.

Kalevala · 22/01/2024 19:42

Oh, and perry!

Obviouslynotallthere · 22/01/2024 19:45

57 and red wine, I'm 57 now. Friend told me I wouldn't get a hangover if I drank Argentine Malbec. Historically I have god awful hangovers so drank very little. Now I get to have a drink at the weekend.

theduchessofspork · 22/01/2024 19:46

In my late teens probably

Wine tasting course is a good idea. A friend of mine really didn’t like wine till her late 20s, but most certainly does now. But some people just never do.

janeintheframe · 22/01/2024 20:02

You’ve got to have a decent one op. You can go down hill after you like it, 😄

for white wine, treat yourself, find a common one, like a Sauvignon Blanc, (I like pinot but it is quite dry for a beginner, but it’s very popular) . Buy a bottle about 10-12 pounds, properly chill it. That’s key. Then pour a glass and enjoy. Hopefully,

Until I was in my 30s, I drank wine to get a bit drunk.

At some point, I decided that I could see the point in just a glass of wine. Something that had escaped me when younger.

Now I like wine too much. It's my favourite cold drink although I only drink at weekends, use a small glass, and only have one glass most of the time. Occasionally two,

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/01/2024 20:19

About 14!

Kalevala · 22/01/2024 21:39

I don't think it's an age thing, just preference, and perhaps sensitivity to any side effects. I will tolerate a small glass of red wine with dinner if offered but no more, and I don't like white wine or procecco at all. I prefer to drink medium to dry cider or perry.

CrispsnDips · 22/01/2024 21:49

Didn’t like it in my 20’s when everyone brewed their own (worked in Saudi!)

But loved it from my 40’s onwards 🍷

FairisleFairy · 22/01/2024 21:49

@CurlyhairedAssassin
oh I almost forgot about Chapel Down Bacchus

that definitely gives the NZ sauv blanc some competition. A bit pricey though so not for every day.

biscuitnut · 22/01/2024 21:49

This thread fascinates me. On a few special social occasions I have been served expensive wine that I have had to sip politely while everyone else was oohing and aahing about this wonderful wine, I am thinking ‘this tastes like shit’ It could have been blue nun for all I knew. I wonder if it’s genetic or something to do with how many bitter/sweet taste buds we have? I always look at people in wonder when they talk about wine. I now need to know why I don’t like it. There must be a scientific reason.

PeggySooo · 22/01/2024 21:50

From about 25 until 30. I'm 35 now and think it's disgusting again and haven't touched it for years

CrappyBarbara · 22/01/2024 21:52

I’m nearly 50 and still waiting. I've had everything from very high-end expensive wines to the cheapest stuff and it all tastes the same to me — not good. I don’t really like the taste of alcohol at all so if I drink it’s going to be something that covers up the taste as much as possible.

Mumaway · 22/01/2024 21:52

I love wine. I can't remember when I didn't like wine. We were always allowed a splash in fizzy water or lemonade growing up, and then a small glass from mid-teens onwards with Sunday lunch etc. Absolutely love a dessert wine which is quite a good place to start, and then progress to dry whites and reds. Yummmmmm

Papillon23 · 22/01/2024 22:02

I think I have liked wine since 17 or 18? Certainly by the time I got to university I liked it. My parents had made an effort though, they didn't want me to struggle at dinners out!

I don't drink loads at all, I have to stay out the habit really.

I don't like sweet wine at all, one I don't mind a small glass of is a chianti but I don't like wine much in general. A few people have mentioned starting sweet, but what if you don't like sweet?

I'm going to disagree with you on the chilling. Most white wine in the UK is served far too cold. We often end up removing bottles from an ice bucket and having them on the table in restaurants so they can warm up!

You lose most of the aromatic qualities of a wine when it is chilled to fridge temperature. Most better whites are made to be drunk at cellar temperature (12-14 C) rather than fridge temperature (4 C) - so serving it a bit colder is OK - it will warm up in the glass - but 4C is a lot too cold and takes a long time to warm up.

louderthan · 22/01/2024 22:42

When I was a teenager 😂 Cheap white wine was my getting-pissed-in-the-park drink of choice. Always hated cider, and never drank lager til I was at university.
Alcopops kind of passed me by as well.
