Memories of the Great Storm of 1987

Do you remember it? Where were you?

I always referred to it as a hurricane but apparently it was actually a cyclone.

I was a young teacher in London in a shared house and I thought it was the end of the world! We got a week off from it though. I remember ringing my parents in Wales the day after to say I was fine and not to worry and they laughed as they hadn’t even had a storm where they were!

I was in the SE and a large tree just missed my house. No electricity for nine days.

it was an odd few weeks.

I worked in Knightsbridge and used to go to Hyde Park at lunchtime. The day after the storm I can remember the trees all having blown down and loads of squirrels looking like they were wondering what had happened.

Though this has been explained there are still some posters confidently proclaiming it was "definitely a hurricane" 😁
