Staying warm when home all day

Nocakeinthishouse · 22/01/2024 10:30

I am currently doing a degree from home. I put the heating on between 7.30am and 8.30am, and then it goes off until 4pm when we return home from school. I'm blinking freezing sat at my desk! I usually put my knock-off Oodie on but then feel like I'm in my pyjamas all day, even though I'm dressed underneath. What do other people do to keep warm?

What's wrong with feeling like you're in your pyjamas?

I work from home and really feel the cold whilst sitting still at a desk.

I actually put my thermal leggings and top on and it makes a world of difference. Thick socks and slippers, and a couple of big jumpers.

Whatwillbewilbe · 22/01/2024 10:33

I have my heating on all day at 18 and boost it if it gets too cold and I’ve put a warm jumper on.

Nocakeinthishouse · 22/01/2024 10:34

Thank you @MaggieFS . I don't know what is wrong with feeling like I'm in my pjs, I think I can just hear my mum shouting at me to get dressed, haha!!

The secret is moving around
Take regular breaks and go outdoors, fast walk round the block. Feels incredibly warm when you get home.

Nocakeinthishouse · 22/01/2024 10:36

@Whatwillbewilbe , our heating is quite ancient and only has an off or an on-we do have an old dial thermostat but all the numbers rubbed off years ago (we're in rented) so I have no idea what it is actually set to. It's enough to take off the chill but not enough to take your jumper off, haha!

Same here!

Last winter in a much older house we worked out that having the heating on all day actually cost less than trying to warm a cold house from scratch a couple of times a day.

This winter we're in a new build which generally stays warm once up to temp (which takes less than an hour), so the heating is barely on, but the house is warm.

AbbeFausseMaigre · 22/01/2024 10:43

Thermal leggings under whatever trousers you are wearing, and embrace the Oodie. I also don't like the feeling of being in my pyjamas all day, but as long as I've showered and I'm wearing normal clothes underneath, it's totally fine.

And yes, taking breaks to move around (sort laundry, unload dishwasher etc).

Whatwillbewilbe · 22/01/2024 10:44

@NoWordForFluffy yes we too experimented with our heating last year and also discovered that, for us, it was cheaper to keep the heating on all day rather than try to heat it from cold. Although it’s set to all day the boiler only kicks in when it drops below 18, not the whole time.

Mumtoboys82 · 22/01/2024 10:48

I WFH and use a heated blanket on my lap, it's lovely! I resent putting the heating on when I spend most of the day in one room

Closertinydancer · 22/01/2024 10:49

Microwaveable dogs water bottle! Stays hot for much longer than kettle liked one. Also used to keep all doors open as in and out, could listen out for DS when back for school etc. now found keeping office door closed all day and night makes a big difference in retaining heat.

Pyjamasalldayplease · 22/01/2024 10:53

I have a small plug-in oil-filled radiator in the room I work in, right next to my desk. That keeps the one room nice and snug, as long as the door is closed. Saves having to heat the whole house and avoids numb fingers!

Also recommend a knee-warmer in the form of a cat, very effective Wink

DeeCeeCherry · 22/01/2024 10:55

I have a heated dressing gown. Plug it in, heats up immediately. When you want to walk around just unplug, dont have to take it off just push plug & lead into pocket. Worked out it only costs approx 4p per hour to run. Now when wfh I dont even bother to put heating on so, saving massively on bills. I'd rather feel like I'm in my pyjamas all day rather than sit freezing, I hate the cold. You can get wearable hot water bottles nowadays too

Nocakeinthishouse · 22/01/2024 10:59

You are all brilliant fonts of knowledge, thank you!!! I LOVE the idea of a heated dressing gown, I want one!! Thank you all for your fabulous ideas, I’ll be toasty in no time!!

I grew up in a house with no central heating.

Layer up properly.

So start with a vest and warm socks (preferable wool or cashmere mix). Then put on a thermal layer. I tend to use long sleeved heat tech tops from Uniqlo. Then trousers and a jumper - wool or cashmere will be the warmest - those soft "cosy" jumpers and socks made out of man made fibres are next to useless. Add a scarf (a fine wool mix or knitted silk one and worn like an accessory so it looks and feels good)

Get dressed straight out of the shower or bath that way your body is warm to start with.

Move around fairly often and have regular hot drinks.

Heating is on from 0600-0900 and 1530-2230. Today it's fine, much milder than last week. Last week I had the heating on all day.

ManchesterLu · 22/01/2024 11:59

Wrap up, it doesn't matter what you look like. Hoodies, blankets, whatever. Also put the heating on a little more if you're really cold. Life's just too short!

Hatty65 · 22/01/2024 12:08

A hot water bottle is a game changer. I also layer up. Like pp I grew up in an unheated house in the 1960s/70s and I'd forgotten how good a hot water bottle is. I fill straight from kettle with boiling water.

I work from home a few days a week so have exactly the same situation as you. I have the heating in 6:30-8am then not in again til 4pm when kids are due home. After sitting in 2/3 hour teams meeting I was so cold, I now have a blanket over my knees and legs ( like a Nana lol !) and also a plug in foot muff of Amazon- absolute god send , order one immediately! Also try and leave the desk over lunchtime and walk round hose doing jobs hoovering, washing on etc for movement !

geminiflanagan · 22/01/2024 12:11

Layers! I wfh 3 days a week and outside of the heating being on, our house is around 14.5°

At the moment, I go for a thermal vest, linen shirt and then jumper on the top. I have thick leggings and some merino tights for underneath when it is really cold, then I wear heat holder socks and my slippers. On my lap I have a blanket as my thighs do get really cold.

Then just a continual supply of hot drinks (which also mean I get up regular to make them/pee), sometimes a mini hot water bottle. I do also have turtle doves wrist warmers on the odd time my hands get really cold but I've only needed them during that really cold snap last week.

Yes, I go for short walks, or do a bit of gardening. Or in crap weather, run up and down the stairs a few times — I have a tall house and I work on the top floor, so it’s 53 steps from the ground floor hall to my desk.

geminiflanagan · 22/01/2024 12:12

Oh and a scarf as well. I do also have a smart looking fine knit poncho type thing which works as a blanket and is smart enough for meetings.

onemoredayplease · 22/01/2024 12:14

I work from home and use a heated blanket. Bloody brilliant. Well worth the money. Debenhams had them on sale for £30 on their website.

barkymcbark · 22/01/2024 12:27

Are you in a small room? My office is in a small bedroom so I shut the door and plug in a heater. I also use a heated blanket now and again.

wfhwfh · 22/01/2024 12:29

I use a heat pad at the back of my desk chair. Costs pennies to run and can’t be seen at all on camera. You can buy them for around £20 on Amazon. Really comforting!
