Manchester weather

I’m in Manchester tomorrow for work, travelling up by train.

My office is closer to Manchester Oxford Road station, but my train only stops at Manchester Piccadilly station. Therefore I think I’ll have to walk around 20 minutes to my work after I arrive in Manchester.

I also wanted to go shopping near where Selfridges Exchange is, which is a 20 minute walk from either train station. Google maps suggests to walk instead of public transport

So will walking around Manchester be a write off tomorrow with the current weather? By me, it’s extremely windy and wet and I wouldn’t voluntarily leave the house! But not really seeing any better public transport options around these locations? Any advice appreciated

It’s pretty grotty here at the moment. You could get a taxi from Piccadilly to work - it won’t cost you much. Are you just here for the day?

setsailsam · 21/01/2024 20:43

I’ll be there for 2 days, though Tuesday doesn’t look any better! 😊

Thanks for that, I’ll have to get a taxi instead. Shame about the weather as I’d love to explore more of the city!

You can get a train from Piccadilly to Oxford Road. They run about every 10 minutes and it's a 2 minute journey.

Depending on where you are on Oxford Road, you can get a bus to Piccadilly Gardens (near Primark), but you'd have to walk down Market Street to get to Selfridge's.

Are the trains running?

pinkyfinger · 21/01/2024 20:54

There are free buses that run from Piccadilly all over town, I'm sure you can get one that takes you a bit nearer. The weather is awful at the mo, worse rain than usual, so taxi door to door would be far nicer though!

You need to get your big coat out! I shall also be trotting around in this weather. It sounds quite full on out there at the mo.

TokyoSushi · 21/01/2024 21:50

If you have a big coat with a good hood, you'd be better just walking all of it at a decent pace, none of it is particularly far if you get a shift on!

Fluffyowl00 · 21/01/2024 21:59

I’d walk most of it-quicker.

my tips (25 years here):
wear a dress/skirt and tights (legs dry quicker)
A change of socks if you can wear socks in boots?
A dry pair of shoes/boots every day
waterproof coat with a hood
also a strong umbrella if not too windy keep it low and down at the front
Layers (it’s not that cold if you have layers on. Especially if walking)
Get a taxi there if the rain is really driving down so you’re not sat wet and cold all day.
Headphones on and some Manc classics
Look both ways carefully before crossing the roads. The cars/buses/trams ARE out to get you.

Most of it is covered on one side/sheltered

wear bootleg/wide trousers and you’ll be wet up to your knees all day 😂

Have a lovely time! Everyone is pretty friendly

I’d walk its not a great distance mainly pedestrianised through Piccadilly gardens and round side of arndale to get to Selfridges

GeorgeTheFirst · 21/01/2024 22:15

Get the tram from Piccadilly to St Peter's Sq if that is near your office? And then from there to Exchange Sq for Selfridges. It's walkable yes, but not nice in the rain/wind

GeorgeTheFirst · 21/01/2024 22:17

I've lived here 25 years. I'd use the tram in the City centre, or walk. Never use the buses. Only a cab if work is paying, nowhere is that far

setsailsam · 21/01/2024 23:11

Ahhh thank you all!! I wasn’t sure what to even wear tomorrow but I probably won’t go for trousers now😄wish I had a big duvet coat. It looks like I can get the tram actually, and that there’s a train between those two stations. Not sure how I missed that when I checked google maps earlier.
