Strait-jackets for babies ?

Georgyporky · 21/01/2024 19:27

I keep getting pop-up ads for what seem to be strait-jackets for tiny babies.
Is this a new thing ? What is the purpose ?

Straight-jackets for toddlers I could understand , and would have welcomed at one time !

Are they swaddles?

Years ago I used to swaddle my baby using a cot sheet wrapped around her - she settled really quickly when swaddled.

i think these days they are pre-made swaddle garments

Growuppeople · 21/01/2024 19:37

Lol I doubt it, let’s see them then? Wait what do you mean you understand for toddlers!?

Newmum738 · 21/01/2024 19:38

We had a pre-made swaddle and it was great. It makes baby feel secure.

If you're talking about swaddling, it reminds them of being all snug in the womb, I think.

Although if they actually are straight-jackets, perhaps it reminds them of their past lives as Batman villains?

PuttingDownRoots · 21/01/2024 19:50

I keep getting adverts for in car tvs. As in.. in the front of the car so you can watch a film while driving...

UnravellingTheWorld · 21/01/2024 19:55

Those beds with built in straightjackets? I can understand the science behind why (small babies like being swaddled) but the sight of them horrifies me! I would never even consider something like that.

Because they are little buggers who get themselves into loads of trouble!! It was a joke. Well a half joke.

Oh, I used to get adverts for those all the time at one point! They looked rather awful, and iirc cost about £1K. Compared to the Moses basket I got passed on for free and only needed a new mattress for, that seemed rather pricey.

As far as I know swaddling, the way babies have been settled for millennia, is no longer recommended due to research recently, no doubt a slightly higher risk of something. So along come a generation of unsettled babies and stressed sleep deprived parents, which I'm sure does significantly more damage to both. The recommendation changed between my first and last child. I'm guessing this is an alternative.

Smartiepants79 · 22/01/2024 08:42

They will be swaddles, surely?
My 2 both loved them and slept beautifully in them.

Jijithecat · 22/01/2024 08:45

They're swaddles. They help if the baby has a startle reflex that wakes them up.

I still remember my Midwife arriving for our first post natal visit, I'd been up all night with a baby who would not be put down and was exhausted and teary. Midwife took her, swaddled her and put her down in the moses basket, where she immediately stopped crying and slept for a solid couple of hours. It was like magic!

Mrsjayy · 22/01/2024 08:50

oh I'm now getting them, they are swaddles in the :olden days when I had babies you used shawls to do the same thing. Straight jackets though😂

Dd2 was born in Abu Dhabi, where I shared a hospital room very briefly with a local woman. Just before leaving, I wrapped dd in a shawl (it was their winter) but my room mate grabbed her from me, saying, ‘Laa, laa, laa!’ (No, no, no!) in no uncertain terms, and proceeded to re-wrap her very tightly, before handing her back - evidently thinking, ‘Clueless bloody foreigner!’ 😂

Mine all hated being swaddled, I did try it as everyone kept telling me it would make them sleep better. When they got a bit older none of them could bear having bedding tucked in, feet always outside. Not sure why but it is a family trait, I also sleep with my feet on top of the duvet. My husband thinks we are hilarious, he likes to be tucked in.

I don’t think she meant to be - she just thought a clueless foreigner like me ought to know. She evidently wasn’t educated - I think she was probably a Bedouin woman, still wearing the same clothes she’d arrived in.

Having said that, in AD we lived among a largely Greek Cypriot community and some of those women often took it upon themselves to tell me I was doing everything wrong with my dds - everything from how I dressed them to potty training. As for swimming while pregnant, ‘Your bones will open and you’ll lose the baby!’ And you had to cover the baby’s face if taking it out after dark, to keep any Evil Eyes away.
This was all decades ago now though - I dare say there are far fewer old wives’ tales now.

Presumably to stop them colouring on the wall, rubbing Sudocrem into the carpet, tipping the baby out their cot....or whatever they get up to when they go deadly silent...

Babla · 22/01/2024 09:45

You can easily swaddle a baby in a small sheet.. does help them to sleep better

BurbageBrook · 22/01/2024 10:55

I know what you mean OP, isn't it called a Snoo? A swaddle that basically ties them to the bed! I think it's very weird.

KarenNotAKaren · 22/01/2024 11:02

Do you mean a swaddle? Which is a centuries old method to recreate the tightness and closeness a baby felt in the womb. Quite different from a straight jacket which is an inhumane and I believe banned (?) method of restraining adults.
