Any dentists around to help with this dilemma?

Hi,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me decide something.

I've had root canal done twice in 2 years on two very tiny teeth (with 2 roots each) The teeth are dead now but I've had them internally whitened.

The infection below those teeth has come back, it doesn't hurt, it's annoying and unpleasant, so I went to the Dentist, who drained it and told me the teeth have to go.

The issue being, they are at the front. The Dentist says I need to have them out asap, have the gum cleaned and get a bone transplant and then have a temporary denture for 4 months while it heals and then get a dental implant.

My issues are, once the teeth are gone, that's it, no going back, plus having the temporary denture is going to be pretty horrible. I won't want to eat in front of anyone and it will shatter my already pretty shaky, confidence!

Obviously there's the cost too, on top of what I've already spent on the 2 root canals.

I've been thinking about it and wondering, what the issue with just letting it be for now? The teeth are dead, the infection is clearing and if they get worse, then I'll have to have it done but I don't know what or why there is an urgency to it? Can anyone in the know advise?

Bit of background, the problem with the gum and those teeth started when I was 11, it got worse over the years but I didn't sort it until my early 40s, so it can't be that dangerous surely?

Gum disease can cause cardiac issues. Just so you know

i would t leave it and damaged root canals have been the bane of my life. I had the tooth out and would 100% have it done again

Ooo can I also ask please... Back wisdom tooth here. It's really hard to clean. My dentist says i can have it taken out in the dental
Hospital. But I'm so scared. All i read about are days of pain and dry socket... would sedation help? Or would that just be horrible?

I don't know what to do. My dentist is staying fairly neutral. But says I'll want it out sooner or later.

Thank you @Cerealkiller4U. Food for thought

Dentist here. I'm a bit confused - if the teeth are 'dead' and you've had them internally whitened, how can the infection have come back? Is it an infection in the tooth, or related to gum disease? The root canal has not been successful if the infection is returning

ElsaMars · 23/01/2024 14:51

@18daychallenge good question! I will see if I can explain it. The gum below the two teeth gets swollen and I sometimes get pus from a little hole at the front, this has happened since the root canal and whitening last May. The dentist said the hole was useful for the drainage, it's naturally occurring, not made by the dentist. I assumed it would improve and generally it has, but it got a bit more inflamed over Xmas, a bit more pus but zero pain or soreness because they're dead teeth.
My question is really, do I need to spend 4.5k sorting this when it causes no problems really? My only worry would be sepsis but it's been going on so long. I dont know what to do.

@PrawnDumplings I've had my last tooth out in hospital under sedation. I had a bad experience years ago and it scarred me for life!
Honestly it's a game changer. I had the sedation then don't remember anything until it was over. Follow the instructions they give you for aftercare and you'll be fine.

MorrisZapp · 23/01/2024 15:36

It's a very long waiting list for sedation on the NHS, I've got three post root canal broken teeth that need to come out and I've been waiting for a couple of years.

No idea if it can be done privately or at what cost.

Elsamars you have a chronic infection as the root treatment has failed (no root treatment lasts forever). Worst case scenario is it will flare up and cause your lip/face to swell and be really sore.
Chronic infection can cause bad breath too.

@MorrisZapp try chasing them to find out where you are on the list. That's what I did after 6 months and suddenly I'm called for an appointment.
