What are my chances of having unpaid leave from work?

I know no one will know for sure but I’d be interested in knowing whether companies do this in reality or whether it’s frowned upon.

I was 50 this year passed but couldn’t celebrate it like I wanted as my mother passed away.
This year we’d like to celebrate properly with a nice extra holiday, also to be honest I’m tired and feel I need a couple of weeks extra rest.

My annual leave allowance is already generous at 30 days plus bank holidays but I could really do with another two weeks, taken in a block of a week at a time.

I do know that another member of staff was given a 3 month sabbatical to travel but this was because she’d already booked this trip before taking up employment.

Ive been there 30 years this year. I could really do with the flexibility of some unpaid leave and as I’m getting older it’s something I might want to repeat in later years too. I can well afford it.

DH says I shouldn’t give a reason for wanting it (just say personal reasons) but it will be obvious if I use it to travel. Our department is busy but well staffed.

I did take at least a week of parental leave until my youngest turned 18. My manager didn’t really say much about it but I could tell he wasn’t massively impressed 😞

Is this a common request and should I be open and honest when I say I’d want it to travel / rest etc? Has anyone done this?

You can request, all they can do is refuse.
I once requested just a few days unpaid in the middle of the year as I already had holidays booked. It was refused because all leave must be used up before taking any unpaid leave!
Why they couldn’t just swap things about and change the end of my booked holiday to unpaid, and the extra days I wanted changed to holiday, I don’t know.

In my workplace you can "buy" annual.leave weeks. Its worth considering if your manager will allow you to work extra hours every day (ie finish an hour later) and take this as TOIL.

I do oncall sessions and use this as TOIL rather than pay.
