The Traitors, I'm voting for yourself

I've been watching 'The Traitors' lately, and I can't help but notice a recurring linguistic quirk among the contestants.

They often say things like "I am voting for yourself because xyz" or "When we were alone, you said to myself." Is it just me, or is this grammatically incorrect?

It started with Jaz, I think. But now everyone is talking like that!

Its reminding me of Big Brother yeeears ago when one person started calling everyone chicken, so then everyone called everyone chicken.

Yes it drives me mad. It's only acceptable if you're Geordie, Scottish or Irish. With a southern accent it just sounds wrong!

Myself etc has been around for yonks. Drives me batty. It is like everybody was afraid of saying "me" having had "Sam and I not Sam and me" drummed in to them at school and things that "me" is taboo. But then it spread to thinking you can't say you either.

That has been winding me up as well 😂it just doesn't sound right!

DS1 and I have decided we can't apply for the next series because we'd end up correcting everyone that says that! It's so annoying.

Oh god this drives me insane!!! And ao often used in business by jumped up little shits in suits thinking they're important 🤬🤬
We have recently bought a house and 'yourself' was used incorrectly in the offer acceptance letter too!!!

Yes I think its the southerners taking it on that has me twitching.

Also noticing the patterns of people starting to copy other people's language so quickly. They've only been together for 2 weeks.

Yep, it is annoying and grammatically wrong.
"I am voting for you because..." is all they need to say, why complicate it!

bogoblin · 20/01/2024 11:09

I HATE IT! So many people use it to sound "smarter" or more professional I think and I find it really jarring and immensely annoying. Glad I'm not alone!

MotherOfSuburbia · 20/01/2024 11:21

It's everywhere! I work in a school and SLT use this all the time: 'Any issues with safeguarding speak to myself.' Me! Speak to me!!!!

I just had to do a car insurance claim recently and so I've had endless conversations with various people on the phone. All of them were yourself-Ing and myself-ing all over the place to the point I couldn't answer some of the questions because they made no sense at all. I kept having to run sentences through my head like a translator.

So, is it alright for yourself to be having this conversation with myself today?

Glad I'm not the only one.
