How long do you open your windows for this time of year?

If you are in the UK, how long do you open your windows for in the morning in winter? We have dogs and I leave them open (including the back door) for an hour or two, first thing in the morning. This is because I like to have fresh air in the house daily, but also because I'm rushing around during that time so don't go and shut them. WHen I get to my desk ready to work, I go around and close them. My DP would open them for 20 minutes and then turn the heating straight back on.

It's true that the house gets rather cold during the time the windows are open but are we supposed to live in a stuffy place? So I'd like to hear what others do. Thank you.

If it were up to me I'd open all windows daily for at least 10minutes, however my partner is an absolute pansy when it comes to cold so he would moan endlessly! 🙄. Its just me at home on Monday so u can bet your arse ill have those windows nice and open!

GintyMcGinty · 20/01/2024 11:26

It's too cold. They stay closed.

No, it's really quite nice and warm, even with the windows open.

Do you mean heating on and windows open?

Is it on all day to keep it warm with windows open

cardibach · 20/01/2024 11:30

My bedroom door is always closed so I open the windows for most of the day even in winter to air it and also the bed (duvet turned back). Bathroom has window open and door shut after a shower - until whenever I next go in there. Don’t really open anything else unless I’m outside doing something, then I’ll leave the back door open. My house is old (1860s) and brick built with lime plaster so the walls breathe.

OpalOrchid · 20/01/2024 11:32

No one in their right minds would leave the windows wide open for hours when it's -6 outside. I can only think those that claim to do this wear several layers of clothes at all times.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 20/01/2024 11:34

I have never even thought of this - why would you have your windows open in winter? I open them in the summer if its hot but otherwise they stay shut. We have the heating on so it would be false economy to have the windows open too!

Paw2024 · 20/01/2024 11:35

Trickle vents always open
Bathrooms don't have windows so fan only
Usually have the kitchen window or bedroom window open for a couple of hours total over the day

Caspianberg · 20/01/2024 11:37

@theriseandfallofFranklinSaint - to let in fresh air. If you use a co2 detector you will be shocked how quickly air can go bad. It can cause headaches and isn’t great in general. If any of you have a cold or sniffles you’re just coughing your germs to float around if you never open. 5-10 mins at a time, will help and reduces issue like mould

I don't leave windows wide open for hours, only about an hour with current temperatures, longer when we get to around March. I do wear a jumper over a warm top and warm socks, never summer clothing in winter.

Paw2024 · 20/01/2024 11:38

And no heating on obviously when I do this!
5c here outside at the minute and I'm comfortable as have been cooking and about to do a workout

spicedlemonpie · 20/01/2024 11:39

My little windows are open all year round big windows i pull in but leave on latch.
Bathroom little window open all year never closed it.
Bedroom little one same never closed it cant sleep with it closed.
In the summer their all wide open day and night.
I never understood anyone that keeps windows closed all the time it can cause mould.
To stuffy for me.

Sprig1 · 20/01/2024 11:40

Bedroom windows open for an hour after getting up. Bathroom windows cracked open all day. Rest of the house only if I am having a big clean or it smells stuffy.

DragonFly98 · 20/01/2024 11:40

Not at all it's freezing weather.

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 20/01/2024 11:40

Bathroom windows and one conservatory window are always open on the catch.
Bedroom window is opened when I get dressed and closed when the heating clicks on at 4:30.
I like to do similar with the living room and kitchen.

I'd rather be a bit cold and have the air fresh - I hate the house to be stuffy and doing this has reduced my migraines and congestion issues considerably.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 20/01/2024 11:42

Ten minutes in the morning for downstairs when the cat goes out. Once or twice a week for upstairs bedrooms if I remember. Bathroom window- always!

OpalOrchid · 20/01/2024 11:43

It would take ages for my house to warm up again if I opened the windows for an hour a day. My heating bills are high enough as it is.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 20/01/2024 11:43

I grew up in a house where the windows were more or less never opened, certainly not in winter. It was a big draughty Victorian house and didn't seem to fester, so I'm guessing there was enough air circulating! It was only when I met my husband that I realised people actually opened windows on purpose!

IglesiasPiggl · 20/01/2024 11:44

At this time of year I do a ten minute through draught in the bedrooms in the morning and that's sufficient. But I live in a well ventilated detached house, efficient bathroom extractors, no washing drying round the house.

I quickly feel unwell in my grandmother's house if she has had windows shut for a while. It's like wearing a mask was for me, headaches and fatigue.

megletthesecond · 20/01/2024 11:46

Bedroom windows just get opened for 5 mins. Bathroom window is on the latch all day, opened for showers and shut at night.
I think all the trickle vents are open though, except on the most sub zero nights.

SKG231 · 20/01/2024 11:48

Our upstairs windows in bedrooms and bathroom are open all year round all the time. Fresh air is important to health and the house!

What’s the temperature in the bedroom?

OpalOrchid · 20/01/2024 11:57

I get enough fresh air when I'm outside. I don't need a freezing cold house as well.

mrstrickland · 20/01/2024 11:58

`I love a fresh house so every morning every window is opened and left opened until it gets too chilly in house. My bedroom window is open all night, even in minus temperatures!

CompletedNetflix · 20/01/2024 12:00

We don’t open them in this weather, I like to be warm.
